Assuming, of course, that you have no mobility issues...

Or bags, drinks, food, shopping, shore souvenirs, umbrellas, etc etc etc. :D

BTW In Montreal if you DON'T use the germ encrusted hand rails on the escalators leading up or down to the Metro, you can get a ticket... I believe it's for $ 55.00.

That's to help pay for the extra printing costs resulting from the name change of Bill 60 to "charter affirming the values of state secularism and religious neutrality and of equality between women and men, and providing a framework for accommodation requests." :D

A virus IS a germ; it's not a bacteria. A germ is an organism, usually one that causes illness. They can be bacteria, virus, fungus etc.

THOROUGH Hand washing is the best line of defense and being careful about what you touch and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth. But you can only be so careful. My nose itches… sometimes I automatically, without thinking, scratch it. I walk down the stairs.. sometimes I automatically grab the railing. You can be careful but you probably can't be perfect. (OK I can't)

There are gels that are more effective than others in combating noro. GERMSTAR NORO is a better one and you can buy 2 oz bottles at Amazon.

Purell Advanced kills 99.99% of germs. Essentially all of them. I believe that is what is used on most ships, hence the warning not to use products from home in place of the ship's "squirt." Handwashing has to be thorough and not just a 5-10 second washing. A quickie hand wash isn't going to be as effective as proper use of Purell Advance or Germstar Noro. I've noticed people in public restrooms (the ones who do bother to wash and all) and most of them are a quick in and out. So the use of both is probably best for optimal protection.

FYI, there are a couple of people just on this board who have mentioned they are allergic to them. I don't think that's a good idea.

I'm one of those that's allergic to it.......suspect the stuff evaporates pretty quickly so probably not an issue, nice of you to mention it though......but boy I sure am tired of the dirty looks I get from people when I refuse the hand sanitizers when entering the dining room or buffet area.....don't judge when you don't know the story....

Good use of soap and water, followed by a squirt of the better hand sanitizers like Purell Advanced will keep your hands clean. But the sad truth is that noro viruses are extremely virulent, much more so than many other illnesses. It take just one tiny particle to infect you. If you are in a rest room or elsewhere where someone has been ill there are particles in the air and sorry to be gross but if you can smell it then guess what is already in your body. May or may not make you ill but you have been exposed. I only say this because sometimes on these threads there is so much accusation that the virus is spreading because people are not following good cleanliness protocol. And I agree 100% that doing so can make it worse and spread the virus faster. But often you can wash your hands diligently and often, avoid touching things, avoid the buffet etc etc and still get sick. Currently there is a vaccine for this being tested - it can't come soon enough!!

Can you provide some reference material for this? With respect to the norovirus, the CDC states that "There is no evidence showing that people can get infected by breathing in the virus" but you are perhaps aware of new evidence that you could share with the board? I think that most cruisers are concerned about the norovirus and any new information would be appreciated.

You can not get noro by inhalation.

You are correct. Noro is not airborne. In the hospital, contact precautions including gown and gloves are used to prevent the spread. It is important to note that you must be aware of droplet risk when someone is actively vomiting. Don't stand within a few feet of a puker. This has been a public service announcement from nurse Dawn :p

Some of you have addressed my favorite pet peeves: what good is washing one's hands if then the door handle is grabbed? Laying serving implements on top of the food!!! I see it all the time at salad bars in grocery stores. And the old Knuckle-Button combination. Wonderful. I'm glad I'm not alone in this :)

I saw somewhere, that "buttons" in public places like food machines, elevators, buzzers, etc are some of the germiest places because people's finger tips are used.... well you get the idea.

I think we should all stay home in our bubbles, like the Bubble Boy. We'll be safe then!

I remember when I was a kid many, many years ago, the grocers in NYC used to keep open barrels of pickles with tongs out side in front of their stores, & you could just pick out the ones you wanted. How did we ever survive??

According to the CDC in Atlanta the virus can get into the food supply. Are you not suppose to eat. Do the cruise lines dump the food. How come they never close the casino during an outbreak. If anywhere that is one place where it could spread. Also who watches the food services workers and there hygiene. The cruise lines are as much to blame as the passengers.

Why are we "blaming" anyone..... there are viruses everywhere and occasionally we catch them....yes we should be careful about washing our hands and so should everyone else....but schools get these breakouts...nursing homes get them....they are everywhere....cruiselines just seem to get SO much more scrutiny I suppose because people's vacations are disturbed......

Agree, something like 35 million Americans get it every year. The discussion doesn't even factor in how many people get it on days in port or bring it on board from the airports and planes.

Hi Rich, down to counting days till it's cruise time!!! :D

Being aware of common filth zones where one can contract a nasty virus so you can better lessen the chance of getting sick doesn't make anyone a "Bubble Boy" :p

Not going anywhere or avoiding travel and cruising would be "Bubble" like I guess, but no one is suggesting that..

My wife shares your concern, so she removes the wrapper from a cup in the bathroom and puts it around the remote. She is so clever, I can't keep up with her
