Going back to ship early?

I'm going on a cruise in May, and has a few questions about the different ports. Can you go back to the ship any time you want once you get off, or do you have to wait for a specific time. We don't plan on doing many formal excursions and plan on going to the beaches at the ports, but would like to know if we would have the freedom to return to the ship when we want. Thanks!!

You can come and go as you please.

You can get back on anytime you wish. We have gone ashore for the morning, gone back to the ship for lunch then back ashore for the afternoon.

Welcome to Cruise Critic Ctlee88:)

You can go on and off the ship as often as you like when in port.

Often we go into port and look around and sometimes return for lunch and then return to port again in the afternoon.

Not only can you get off and on when you like but you can also just stay on board and not get off at all!!

IF it is a port where the ship uses a tender boat to bring folks back and forth to the ship then you might have to wait for one of them to be ready to take you. Otherwise you can just walk on and off the ship as you wish.

It's actually kind of neat being on the ship when everybody else is ashore. Bar service is super speedy, no lines at the buffet, pools not crowded, you get to wander all over the ship and see things that you don't normally see while underway. (All public areas of course.) The downfall is that the ship's stores and casino will be closed.

You will need your S&S card and a picture ID to get back onto the pier and ship. Also, you have to be back on board 30 minutes prior to departure time and the lines can be really long so keep that in mind.

If it's a tender port, try to be extra early and find out when the last tender leaves. There are usually tenders going to different ships so make sure you're in the line for your ship.

And the most important thing is to take your Fun Times with you so that if you miss the ship you will know who to contact on shore to assist you.

If you have to tender, it may not be worth it timewise to get on and off the ship multiple times.

I only really plan an actual excursion in one port. The rest of the time, I just walk around, shop, get something to eat or go to the beach.

Even if you have to take a tender, I would get off the ship. How can you say you went to "fill in blank here" if you never got your feet on the shore.

DH and I have been known to wait a while on board, no lines for lunch on the Lido, and then spend the afternoon some where. I have this thing about having to pay for food on shore, unless I am spending the whole day somewhere. I mean you did already pay for it when you paid for the cruise, but I do get off the ship, if just for a moment.
