Coral - Oceanview - Alaska

Planning an Alaska cruise in May and feel an oceanview would be more economical than a balcony (assume quite cool temps and limited balcony use)

 

1. Does anyone concur with this line of thinking?

Some people will still use the balcony quite a bit on an Alaska Cruise. In the end it comes down to your priorities and budget. You can also enjoy many nice views on the open deck.

We went to Alaska a couple years ago in May. We had a balcony and really enjoyed it. We were on the starboard side going north so we saw the coastline the entire time. The balcony afford you views of Glacier Bay, calving of the icebergs, etc without having to leave your cabin for a view on deck.

 

I understand that the OV cost less but when you do the scenic cruising everyone wants to be on deck.

I love my balcony cabins but for alaska we booked an inside for 2 reasons:

1. 800pp cheaper than an OV

2. lots of light in Alaska all night! we like the insides for sleeping.

 

I just can't justify the extra money for the cabin, I am spending that much just on excursions in Juneau. It is all personal preference. Have fun planning.

We have been on three the past three years, all in September and always get a balcony. We do spend time on it, just about every day, even if it's only an hour or two.

 

We also like our cabin room temperature to be cooler than most people & it was nice on many night to crack open the door a small amount to get it cooled down. Plus, we enjoy hearing the water outside too when we go to bed.

There is often a Park Ranger onboard and you might want to be on deck with him/her instead of watching from a balcony. You could use the money saved on an excusion.
