1st timer on NCL....what do I wear??

We've cruised for years. Been on 17 cruises. Our latest run of cruises has been on Carnival and we love the more casual dress code in the dining rooms. We have tuxedo and formal evening wear but don't like to go that route any more. How is the dress code on NCL ships? Thinking of booking the Getaway in spring of 2014. He usually wears nice slacks and long sleeve shirts. I wear dressy pants and everything from sparkly tops to lace. Would that wardrobe be acceptable in for dinner? And what about "formal" or "elegant" night....if they still have those on NCL?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you all. I am looking forward to being casual at night. Now to just decide a date.....oh yeah and convince hubby we need to plan another cruise. We already did 2 cruises in 2013 so it might take a little arm twisting.

On the other side of that, my BF only wears pajama pants with sleeve-less shirts when we are at home. If we go to a "nice" restaurant I can get him into jeans and a polo shirt. If we stick to the buffet, the casual MDR, and O'sheenans, will he be ok in his normal attire?

You will be fine in O'Sheehans and the Buffet....not too sure about the casual MDR, that would be up to the Maitre d' (sleeveless might be an issue regular tshirt would be fine)

Jeans and a polo shirt will get you into any of the venues on the ship on any night. The only restriction is no shorts in the more formal of the MDRs and Le Bistro, and Ocean Blue on the newer ships. Jeans are ok. Shirts with collars OK.

( I hope you weren't asking if he could wear pajama pants at dinner ). He can even wear shorts at any venue except the ones listed above. Save the pajama pants for the cabin.

What Should I Pack?

When it comes to what to wear, you can go resort casual or get decked-out and look your best - it’s your call. That’s the freedom of Freestyle Cruising. We even have special “Dress-Up or Not Night.” It’s the perfect opportunity to get your portrait taken with your family, that special someone or even with the ship’s Captain.

Dress cruise casual anytime during the day, in the buffet and in most specialty restaurants. For women, it includes summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops. Khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts are fine for men. Swimwear is acceptable at the buffet and outdoor restaurant, but a shirt or a cover-up and footwear are required. Cruise casual is also allowed day and night on embarkation day.

Wear smart casual if you are eating dinner in the aft main dining room (our more formal dining room) and in Le Bistro on cruises longer than five days. For women, it includes slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops. For men, it’s jeans or slacks with a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Traditional Bermuda shorts along with long socks, loafers and a blazer are all acceptable on a Bermuda cruise.

We want you to be comfortable, but tank tops for men, flip flops, baseball caps, visors and jeans that are overly faded, with holes or tears and worn below the hips are not permitted in main dining rooms or specialty restaurants. Kids 12 and under are welcome to wear nice shorts in all our restaurants. You may want to pack a sweater too—air conditioning can be chilly.

Since your suitcases are collected the night before we return home, don’t forget an overnight bag for prescriptions and need-to-have items.

I don't think pjs are appropriate dinner wear, but if he wanted go ahead in the buffet! You are on vacation after all.

Think of it as a restaurant at home. Would he go to Applebee's in his PJ pants? Shorts and t shirts are fine, but not your nightwear. His dress up clothes for nice restaurants at home will work for MDR.

LOL! And people complain about shorts at dinner!:)

I own liquor/wine stores. You can't imagine how many people (men & women) come in to shop in pajama pants.. I feel horrible when I'm behind the register all day during the holidays and wearing slippers that no one can see but me. It's amazing how lazy some people have gotten lately. I understand comfort, believe me. But I am comfortable in my jeans and nice tops at work. I ALWAYS call them on it too. And when we do get all gussied up we don't return to our cabin to change after dinner............SORRY just had to vent.

Yes, sorry to say I was asking about the pjs. He wears those anywhere from Olive Garden to the movies to a live show. It's embarrassing, but I hate asking him to dress up on vacation (he thinks jeans are dressing up)

But luckily it's not too hard to get him into a regular t-shirt, so sounds like we're in luck

Since you have saved so much on clothing over the years you should go for the NCL suite life and have the butler deliver your meals. I have posted here on CC many times over the years how much I enjoy a meal in the cabin after a day in port, dining in my pjs.

You do realize YOU are in control right? He doesn't wear jeans like you want, he doesn't get what he wants. Seems simple to me.

I feel your pain, my husband refused to dress up for his sisters wedding. I refused to go with him in shorts so we settled on pants and a polo-not the suit I wanted, but more comfortable for him.

I understand you want to pick your battles. It is your vacation so do whatever, but at the same time a little curtesy to those around you. I wouldn't be caught dead at a live show in pjs, but I go out without make up which might freak out someone else...everyone has an opinion the only one that matters is yours and his. If he is embarrassing- don't go out with him like that. You can't control what he wears, but you can control where you go with him dressed like that.
