Smoking In Room?

I suppose that I am just a mean person but I'd cancel the cruise for her if she cannot abide by the no smoking in room rule!! IF you cannot afford a balcony for her or she won't pay for the upgrade then just let her stay home!!

I don't think it's mean at all, but only fair to fellow cruisers. Mom needs an attitude adjustment and I'd be inclined to leave her at home.

No offense to you, but your mom REALLY ticks me off! As someone who gets horrible headaches being around cigarette smoke, if I had to be in a room next to her or stay in the room after her I would be sick the entire cruise. She needs to just go to a designated smoking area or change to a balcony.

I feel the same. How rude and inconsiderate!

A flat fee of $250 and the option of being put off the ship .

Wow put off the ship! Maybe that will be enough to stop the OP's mother from smoking in the room.

Back when the Paradise first went into operation, it was, as we all know, a smoke-free ship. I don't recall exactly when it happened, but the teenage son of a family on the ship was caught smoking, and not only did the family have to pay the fine, they also had to leave the ship. Needless to say, the mom and dad were, to put it mildly, highly pissed off at their son! So, to the OP, tell your mother to not only have enough money to pay the fine, but to make sure she has her passport and enough money to get back home after she's escorted off of the ship for violating the rules.

I think it is just the opposite.

You read countless posts from people who have gotten away with smuggling.... very few from those caught because of the embarrassment.

Same with smoking. People will be very hesitant to admit they knowingly violated the rules.

If I smuggle, that isn't hurting anyone on the ship.

2nd hand smoke is a whole different kettle of fish.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I, like most of you, am very annoyed with my mother over this. WE will be in the room next to her, and neither myself or my husband smoke. I also, by nature, am a rule follower so it just irks me. I spoke with her over lunch today and told her about the fine AND the possibility of being put off the ship. She changed her tune, and has promised me she will not smoke in the room.

Just make sure the credit card for her cabin is in HER name so you won't be charged if she changes her mind about not smoking in the cabin.

When I still smoked I thought things like room spray, opening vents, mints for my breath etc. actually made a difference! Its because my sense of smell was basically gone.

I would make it really clear to mom that she will be paying the charges.

I had to laugh at that. I thought the same thing. Only after I quit did I realize what a fool I was.

OP, I remember my first cruise 30 years ago, and lighting up a cigarette in my cabin, and the smoke filled the room with no where to go. So, although I could smoke, I didn't. It was like sitting in a car with all the windows rolled up.

Being in a cabin and can't smoke is really hard, I know that myself as I just came off a sailing. My mind went in all directions thinking be near a vent to sprays, but adhered to the rule. My cabin already was carrying a small odor of something whenever I entered it and hoped I wouldn't be accused, my guard was up just in case. I cruised solo, so a balcony was out of the question financially. I had access to Lido on that ship, but I don't think Lido is an option on Sunshine, the smoking deck is one deck above that.

Please keep an eye on her as there is more than just a possibility of her being put off the ship for smoking in the cabin, the $250 is a standard charge for cleaning the room out and you can be charged that even if evidence of smoking has been found after you left but if it is discovered while you are on board she is more than likely to be escorted off at the next port. Smoking in the cabin is one of the biggest safety dangers to a ship and they certainly wont think twice about getting her off as soon as possible if she is endangering a ship.If that did happen I doubt you would leave her at the port on her own so you would all be off and you will loose you're cruise and have a bill of thousands of pounds or dollars to get home.

Cruzinmama, you may also want to make sure your mom knows that the smoking areas are pretty limited on cruise ships. You can smoke in designated areas of the casino, dance club and on the exterior open deck areas on the starboard (right) side of the ship. It is prohibited in all other public areas.

I second the recommendation that you change your mom to a balcony room so she can smoke out on the balcony.

As a former smoker who quit nearly 17 years ago, I'd be pretty mad if I got on a cruise ship and my stateroom reeked of cigarette smoke because the previous guests had smoked in it.

Tell your mother that if she insists on smoking in her room and will not book a balcony then you will not pay for her ticket and the fine that will surely come. I am a smoker ( my wife is not ) so we book a balcony. If our balcony room smelled of smoke on checkin I would ask for another room. However, as with all the previous threads about us evil smokers the only way some might be appeased is if we were put into a small boat and towed a few hundred feet behind the ship. Then some would still complain about the smoke magically entering their space. :D

Hi all! We will be taking our first cruise in May 2014. It will be myself, my husband, and our two children. We are also taking my mother, who will have her own stateroom. My mother is a smoker, and we have inside rooms. I was talking to her the other day and she informed me that she still planned on smoking in the room, and that she would just "turn the vent on, and spray some room spray". I am very upset by this, because we are paying for the rooms with our credit cards. I told her there is a $250 fee if you do this and she seems to think she will be able to just get away with it!!!! We are going on the Sunshine and will be on the 8th floor. Are there any outside smoking areas near there? Also, is there a way to change our credit card information for her room to her own credit card? Thanks!

my advice without reading the whole thread book her a balcony room where she can smoke on it!!!! In the end I would say same money as the fine of 250$.

E cigs are only allowed in smoking areas, but I've recently seen people take a few hits on a plane!

I do not think she will be good, A balcony is the only answer, and change the CC to her own. If this is not affordable, then she should stay home..........pick smoking over a family cruise.???..........I've been through it with a family member myself. I was told that "she has to die of something" As a stage 3 cancer survivor, I was so embarrassed and shocked. Good luck!

I hope she sticks to not smoking in the cabin. For your sake, though, have her use her own CC just in case.

Oh Boy...get ready to pay the $250. You can change the Sail & Sign Credit card to your Mom's and that way she will be charged the fine. Your Mom can go down one deck to 7 and go to the outside deck at the front of the ship or up go up one deck to Lido. You may want to see if you can change to deck 7 close to the front. Good luck and have a great trip.

Good idea about deck 7 but I don't believe it is allowed there. Carnival has clamped down on smoking and there are very few places remaining to go. I don't smoke but I have heard the complaining from others.

I'm pretty sure that $250 would at least come close if not completely covering the cost toupgrade to balcony room. Then she'd have a place to smoke AND enjoy the balcony too.

Great advice!!! This seems like the best answer. I quit smoking last year & I NEVER smoked inside.....GROSS! When I did smoke, I always made sure I had a balcony. Although, my mother would do it if she thought she could get away with it:(

True, but unless someone caught her in the act, they don't leave any "evidence" behind that would cause Carnival to charge the $250 or put her off the ship. And they don't have the fire danger either.

That's, right, now go back and read post # 6 in this thread . :p
