What to do on the ship

As well as all the active activities, I highly recommend looking at the sea. Not glancing, but really looking. Mesmerizing, and a bonus when you see something interesting. We have seen flying fish, whales, dolphins, manta rays, sawfish, ocean sunfish, turtles, other ships, water spouts. The sky is fabulous, at sea, too. Be sure to watch the sunset.

Figuring out differnet variations for the (free) food onboard. Getting the ingredients from different places and putting it together in ways the cruiseline doesn't-

Mocha--Chocolate soft serve into coffee

Soda Floats

Using the pineapple chutney from the Tandoor as ice cream topping

Some explanation might be of help.

Our last cruise had the kids against the adults, thus the translation.

The lists are for two different cruises....many items are repeated as different people were involved.

Please feel free to add to the list, but if you could let me know your additions, I'll add them to mine so it can continue to grow and improve.

Besides the usual drinking, eating, sun worshiping, I really enjoyed the lectures, on our last cruise of 36 days on the Queen Elizabeth to the South Pacific, Roger Mcguinn from the Byrds gave 3 lectures as did a man that was part of the White House through many presidents, and a man who was a specialist on the South Pacific , polynesia. Very interesting and informative all.

A few additions to previous posts:

Holland America has "art tours" on an IPOD that you can get from the library. It made me stop and really look at all the cool art / sculptures / displays all over the ship. Sometimes you just walk past lots of interesting things without looking!

I don't know about other lines, but Holland America has board games in the library for check-out, and we had lots of fun playing "chicken-foot" (Dominoes). Lots of people bring/borrow cards and play all over the Lido deck.

Take some yellow police "DO NOT CROSS" tape with you.

Get up early go to the pool and tape off whole sections.

Go to the shows early, tape off about 20 rows.

:D Funny Above!

Also a creative way to make "your own fun" when bored. ;)

A related question is asked by people wondering what to do on a ship. It is hard to understand the lack of imagination which would make people ask that. What do they do at home that they cannot do on a ship? Beyond going to work and driving a car, that is about it. There are entertainment options ranging from music, shows, movies to just watching TV - all more than most people have at home. There is a gym and a swimming pool and hot tubs - again more than what most people have at home. there is a library - admittedly not much of one - and internet - admittedly expensive, places to shop -admittedly restricted - and multiple opportunities to eat and drink.

There is also the opportunity to disconnect - which is not so readily available as at home - and to be alone with one's thoughts -- which might actually be what scares people.

I think it would be a valid question from someone who is going on their first cruise. Not sure I agree with the rest of your comments. At home, I can do a lot of things that I can't do on a cruise ship. I have hobbies that I cannot pursue on a cruise ship.

How about organizing a scooter race around the upper deck. Or maybe a cane fight. We seniors can't always participate in some of the other activities and those same old horse races and belly flob contests are boring.
