Hi all--My spouse and I returned from a lovely transatlantic cruise on the Equinox--a classical string trio or quartet was missing--In the evening at various lounges trios and quartets would play jazz and pop music--while they were entertaining after a while they all sounded the same--guest relstions said that they thought that the lack of a chamber music trio was fleetwide {a pianist did play in the main theater]---Any thoughts???

On the Eclipse TA we had a string trio that played twice in shows. Not sure if they ever played in the lounges. We also had a classical piano duo in the theater, again not sure if they ever played anywhere else. It was a wonderful variety of entertainers.

Cut backs for sure. seen some classical on our trip, but no Piano playing at all. I guess they are limiting these side shows, and alternating with ships. To some it's not their taste, no. It is knowing that you paid for a trip for with always some sort of entertainment around the ship. Next it be a tv screen and seeing a video music performance.

Yes, on the TA, the string trio played one night in the Ensemble lounge. I am sorry to hear that Celebrity is doing away with the classical music.

So, so sad. We loved the stringed quartet!!!! We are Elite + members and no one surveyed us about doing away with this great, relaxing group…….

We are about to go on Reflection next week....like ballroom type dancing...notice they do offer dance classes during the day, but any suggestions on where to dance in the evening?

You will find few if any "good" locations for ballroom dancing on the Solstice classs ships unless you consider dancing at the foot of the grand staircase adequate.

Constellation had a string trio in sailings from Istanbul as well as the Transatlantic in November. They were wonderful.

We also had a great party band and several guitarists.

A jazz group also played almost nightly but we did their style did not attract a strong following.

We loved the string trio on board Eclipse. Of course, this was in 2011 and 2012. It was so magical when you embarked and were handed a glass of champagne and the string trio was playing outside of Cafe al Bacio. We certainly missed the classical music last year on the Reflection. Hope they will bring it back! We enjoy all of the music, but the classical just gave a sense of elegance to the cruise:)

Classical doesn't draw the younger big spenders X wants.

Hmm...are they really the bigger spenders..other than alcohol which most are getting for free in various alc. package offers!!! I don't see so many of them in the spa or upper end shops on bd. but I guess Celeb has made its choice...rap music, DJs, techno canned music, loud pool games etc...no more harpist, less classical and even less Jimmy Buffet style & reggae... They do have some nice jazz groups coming on now & then.

Luckily, we are still able to avoid most of the new stuff by enjoying BLU, our balcony, Cafe Baccio, aft bar and the quieter indoor pool areas plus some nice quiet zones away from the new Celeb. din. Hope we will be able to do so for awhile more...

I'm in my thirties, my husband just turned 40! We both love classical music as well as our three children all in primary school. Age has nothing to do with taste.

On our last X cruise my husband and I spent just a little over $3000.00 on cruise extras. We have budgeted the same amount (give or take) for our upcoming cruise in Feb. Big spenders we are not, just the average.

Their spa does not appeal to me! If it did I would probably spend more. As far as their shops, their merchandise leaves me underwhelmed.

Our favorite thing about X is the smoking policy and all the quiet spaces! We loved the pianist on our last cruise and would be sad if all we heard was crappy bar music.

Of course age has a HUGE amount to do with taste. Ask any advertizing agency, or just look at media aimed for a particular age group and use common sense.

Of course these are statistical statements. They prove nothing about your family or any single individual.

Your forgetting socioeconomic status. People of all age can have an appreciation of classical music.

My husband and I, both 27, prefer classical music and Celebrity. I think we fall into the younger crowd, but probably not the big spender :p

We did notice the lack of classical music and a string trio on our honeymoon (12/9/13 on the Equinox) a couple weeks ago. It was missed.

We joke that cruise companies don't like us because we don't drink or gamble. We did go to Murano one night. And I almost got a pedicure at the spa; but for $80 I could not justify it... even if it was our honeymoon ;)

And to completely screw up the demographic stereotype... I'm 55 and although I have an appreciation for classical music, I much prefer leading edge indie rock/pop. I doubt that any cruise line or ship will ever satisfy my music requirements - hence, I heart my iPhone/iPod.

 As a first time cruiser, are there some significant expenses I've overlooked?

On my last 15 night transatlantic X cruise, I spent $89.00 over the $250 OBC I had.

Everyone has different expectations and budgets. Enjoy in what ever way, at what ever level you can.

Don't worry - unless you're buying a ton of ship excursions, gambling in the casino, spending a ton on Spa treatments and drinking all day.

Our on board bill is usually quite small (depending on how much OBC we were gifted by our TA).
