London Underground - Embankment Station disruption for 2014

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up for anyone planning their London pre/post cruise stays this year. From later this week Northern and Bakerloo line trains will not stop at Embankment station because of escalator refurbishment work, which will take 10 months.

What this means is that Embankment should be regarded as just a District & Circle Line station, with no interchange to other lines. The journey planner on Transport for London's site will reflect this, of course, but beware any directions you see that suggest changing at Embankment :)

Current tube maps reflect this change now. Wonder how many people with now out of date tube maps in "old" guide books will get tripped up by this by planing on transferring to/from the Circle or District lines from/to Northern or Bakerloo.

For most people, this is not a big problem.

Exit through the ticket barriers at Embankment station, then turn left to exit the station. Walk up the hill (Villiers Street). At the top of the hill, take the staircase down into the subways signposted for Charing Cross Underground station. Re-enter through the ticket barriers there, and go down to the appropriate platform.

If you can walk reasonably briskly, this only adds about 5 minutes to total journey time.

The Oyster system has had an Out of Station Interchange set, so exiting at Embankment and re-entering at Charing Cross will count as changing trains, and not as two separate journeys.

I was also a bit annoyed to discover this, but having done this interchange now it's not nearly as bad as my imagination had made it.

I noticed earlier this week that some of the hoardings have been taken down, so it's possible to see a little way from the District/Circle Line platforms down into the interchange passages. Fencing still stops you going down, but that's a sign that progress is being made. "Mid-November" is still the date being given for re-opening.
