wallie5446 Posted January 16, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Whats up with the Cruise Critic I.T. dept puting a Carnival Ad Banner across the top of the Celebrity thread board?
Wiltonian Posted January 16, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2014 I'm seeing a Disney ad. It's all done automatically, not by some IT person's whim - and why shouldn't a board for company X have ads for company y? More point than X advertising on an X board. Denny01 Posted January 16, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Not only do they add 'ads' for other Lines, they have ads that compete with cruising - mine is for Sandals. Don't they know I have enough pairs already??? Den

wallie5446 Posted January 16, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted January 16, 2014 The reason it caught my eye. I am in Retail, sat in on a presentation from a Internet Co trying to sell us on buying Ad space on a web page. We would only pay a fee when someone clicks on our Ad. So I assume it works the same way here. If we are looking for information about Celebrity, would I not be more likely to 'click' on an Ad for Celebrity vs someone else, thus generating a fee for the web site. Just found it interesting. jgnova Posted January 17, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 17, 2014 I think the banner ads are based on sites you've visited in the past. There are varying levels of granularity and that's probably part of the charge base. So one company might want to have their ads if you ever visited a travel site. Or another company (Cunard) might request to have their banners for people who ever went to a Celebrity site. I think some of the ad companies pay per view - and more per click - and even more if you spend time on the site that you clicked to. j

Andy Posted January 17, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 17, 2014 I think it's all random. I've seen other cruise line ads on forums other than their own brand.

Right now mine is Crate & Barrel, which I visited several times last week as well as some competing sites. It always freaks me out when I see them because I feel like someone is spying on me LOL. :D
jgnova Posted January 17, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Cruise Critic uses Ad Choices - read about their services here. It's also possible that some ISPs and browser hacks could subvert this and insert other ads. j
wpgcycler Posted January 17, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 17, 2014 I think it's all random. Not on your life. it's based on information they collect from your Internet trail. Arusha Posted January 17, 2014 #18 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Check your anti-virus software settings. Some (such as Kaspersky) have an anti-banner ad feature you can enable so that banner ads don't display in your web browser.

PTMary Posted January 17, 2014 #21 Share Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) adblocker works… Yes, quite well, in fact. I never see ads in banners nor along the right side of these pages with AdBlocker. One of the best, and most useful add-ons I've found. Works equally well on other sites, too. No more annoying ads trying to separate me from my money. jayoldschool Posted January 17, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 17, 2014 I just can't believe that there are still people out there that don't use ad blocking software. Every now and then when I'm on a strange computer, and I see what websites actually look like these days I'm amazed (and not in a good way). K.T.B. Posted January 17, 2014 #24 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Ah the joys of Ad Block on Google Chrome. :D I see no ads. Oh, and if you're seeing a specific ad, that means you visited that site and downloaded their cookie. So you will see that ad in a lot of places.
