rjack22 Posted January 18, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2014 I searched but couldn't find an answer. Since my last cruise I am now using a insulin pen. My question pertains to sharps containers. Does the ship provide one in my cabin upon request for my used needles or do I need to bring my own?

paul929207 Posted January 18, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Princess provided a sharps box when my wife had to self inject. That was 3 or 4 years ago

Colo Cruiser Posted January 18, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Yes ask Stewart. :)
sminfiddle Posted January 18, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Our experience was that the steward INSISTED on our cabin having not one, but two sharps receptacles. He'd get in trouble for letting med waste get into the wrong part of the ship's recycling stream. ~sent using Cruise Critic app~
waltd Posted January 18, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Best to add it to your cruise personalizer before you leave then when on board just remind your room steward.
notentirelynormal Posted January 18, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Stewart saw my pen and brought me one without even being asked.
Rare Jetswdo Posted January 19, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 19, 2014 I just started with an insylin pen as well. So you are supposed to get a sharps container for the cabin. I will put this on cruise personalizer as well!
greenie082756 Posted January 19, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 19, 2014 On our last cruise, I asked the steward for a container for my needles since I took 3 a day. Not a problem at all, had it immediately. All you have to do is ask! :)
AE_Collector Posted January 19, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 19, 2014 We just did 27 days onboard and my wife used an empty plastic water bottle for all of her used needles from her pens. These needles are so much smaller than the old syringes. We just took the water bottle home with us so no one on the ship had to deal with it at all. Since there is no needle on the pen itself the empty disposable pens are okay in the garbage can. Terry
Times Prince Posted January 19, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2014 We were provided with a sharps container for the lancets used with a glucometer. Just ask and it will be provided.
skf Posted January 19, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 19, 2014 We have been in ships with two sizes of container. If you would like the larger one, feel free to ask "Stewart".
DrivesLikeMario Posted January 19, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 19, 2014 It's best to request it ahead of time. This gives the steward less to do on embarkation day once he's met you. If it's not in your cabin, ask him then.
skf Posted January 19, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 19, 2014 It doesn't hurt to ask in advance, but this is one of the little things that seldom get passed along to the steward.
dbeckett Posted January 19, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) I have always just asked for one when on board but having seen you can ask for one in advance through cruise personalizer I thought I would do that. I can't find the "other" referred to above - can someone say where it is. Thanks Edited January 19, 2014 by dbeckett added text
sweetsleep Posted January 19, 2014 #17 Share Posted January 19, 2014 I use an insulin pump and a CGM device and have not had a problem with getting a sharps container. I always put my test strips, sharps and any catheters that have any body fluids in that container. I assume that any thing that goes below my skin to be a potential risk to others even if its not a needle.

Thanks I also tried requesting through the personalizer but couldn't find any "other" category except in the dietary section so I checked "other" and specified "Sharps container". Hope that does it. Fuzzyape Posted January 20, 2014 #20 Share Posted January 20, 2014 While the question has been answered, I'll throw my 2 cents in. I've always asked Stewart, and of course if he's not there, the steward ;) for a sharps container when we first meet him. Have always gotten one within minutes (even after we tell him there's no rush). Enjoy your cruise.
Babs02 Posted January 22, 2014 #21 Share Posted January 22, 2014 I usually take them to the medical centre, as this is where my pens are stored. They dispose of them for me. I don't have insulin pens, and only require 1 per week. This may be helpful info for anyone who doesn't need daily injections.

Northender Posted January 25, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 25, 2014 From Princess Cruise Personalizer If you will be using sharps of any kind, including needles, lancets, or blades, for your safety and the safety of others you must utilize a sharps container. To dispose of sharps while on board, request a sharps container from your stateroom steward.
