We are going on a celebrity cruise soon and am aware we are not allowed to take alcohol on board. We enjoy a liqueur and wondered if we could get. One on in or case or are they scanned before being brought on board???

We've known other cruisers who bring on liquor with mixed success.

We took a 14 night cruise from Port Everglades three years ago during spring break time. They had signs at embarkation stating that all liquor that was found would be destroyed and not returned. Also, they apparently had luggage scanning equipment that showed a different color scan for alcoholic liquid. We heard this from cruise friends who had to go to security's "naughty room" to get their luggage as security detected a large bottle of medical wash that had an alcohol content. The security guard told them of the special scanning equipment. Our friends got their medical wash but we met a lot of disappointed cruisers who had their booze confiscated and never returned.

I don't know how often they use this equipment or if they usually return confiscated spirits or not on most sailings. I think that cruise was unusual as it was during spring break.

Yes, worst case is they DON'T give it back, and that has been known to happen at spring break (we have seen the same sign). If they do find it, you also run the risk of having your luggage delayed on the first day and not being able to change clothes for dinner, plus the hassle of having to unpack your suitcase in the "naughty room"

There is no such X-ray machine that will show different types of liquid in different colours come on people her smart!

Actually, there is. This technology has been around since 2010. It works by varying the bandwidth of x-ray signals. Different liquids will return the various x-ray signals at specific rates, which are then compared to a database of known liquids. They can tell in less than 20 seconds what is in a bottle, whether plastic or glass, colored or not. These scanners are expensive, but they do work. If the cruise line has access to one of these machines, the original x-ray of a suitcase will identify there is a liquid inside. A second scan with the new machine will identify the liquid. Busted!

We would usually have our duty free stuff that we bring into us. Has always been in cases and, up to now, always delivered in cases to room.

Worst case they give you it back at end of cruise.

I should add that we always have premium alcohol packages with Celebrity and what we take on we take off with us and anything we buy in port is handed in to be returned at the end of the cruise.

We don't have anywhere to leave this while we cruise.

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but it's relevant here. I understand it is possible to purchase bottles of spirits on board for in-cabin consumption, but is it possible to take soft drinks on board? Thanks if anyone can help :)

Yes, the only prohibition of bringing on beverages on board is no liquor/alcohol exception being 2 bottles of wine per cabin.

All other beverages are allowed in as sufficient a quantity as you are capable of handling or sticking a luggage tag on for the porters to deliver.
