We will be in Ketchigan, Juneau and Skagway and want to do one float plane to go over the glaciers and bays. We are looking at Island Wings, but do not know from which port we would have the nicest views or experiences. One of their tours even combines with bear sighting. Can someone recommend one of these plane tour or maybe even helicopter ride ?

Island Wings in Ketchikan is wonderful. Michelle has a float plane that seats 7 total and she flies into the Misty Fjords and lands for a half hour. The view is spectacular. She does bear sightings also, although it depends which month you will be there.

Depending on when you will be in Ketchikan, we have reserved a combined excursion to Traitors Cove to see the bears for three hours, returning via a two-hour Misty Fjords flightseeing excursion. We reserved with Misty Fjords (Shona or Michelle handle the reservations and are very helpful). Traitors Cove is at its peak in August - mid-September.

A significant point the "recommendations" above are missing is "Glacier". Misty fiords is NOT glaciers and if you want to see them, you will have to make special arrangements, and maybe a charter.

Juneau, is the place for floatplane tours with glaicer viewing. Skagway does not have any floatplane tours.

A glacier landing helicopter gets you the added experience of getting off the helicopter and on to the glacier. This is a very popular and raved about glacier experience that can be "better" for a glacier experience.

I have flown both many times and never tire of either experience.

We did the 5 glacier and salmon bake with Taku Lodge last summer (out of Juneau). We flew over several glaciers and then landed at Taku Lodge for a salmon feast. The food was excellent and we were right across from Taku glacier. We also saw a bear eating at the barbecue after we went inside. They don't guarantee that the bears will come out, but the day we were there she did. It was an excellent experience which we would recommend to anyone.
