Import tax

We are scheduled for a Canada/NE cruise in September. One thing I would like to purchase while in Canada is some maple syrup. Is there any type of import tax on this? Just curious as this will be our first cruise north. I doubt that the purchase will be duty free to begin with, so I'm just not sure.

There is sales tax in Canada when you make a purchase

You have a personal amount that you are allowed to take back to the USA

 

Maple syrup is not alcoholic so you can probably take back as much as you want as long as you do not go over your personal allowance

Maple syrup would be treated like any other purchase you make in Canada. As long as it's within your spending limit you won't pay any duty.

 

In addition to Maple Syrup, you should try Maple Butter, my wife swears by it.
