Rare MMDown Under Posted February 11, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2014 Is anyone familiar with Artania, which is docking at the Grain Terminal, Brisbane on 15/2?
Shiprobbo Posted February 11, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 11, 2014 It was originally Royal Princess and later Artemis of P&O UK. She was sold to Pheonix Reisen a couple of years ago and operates in the German market. This company also operates a couple of other ships that visit from time to time, being Amadea & Albatros. Hope this helps, Cheers,
Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 11, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2014 The Royal Princess was christened by the Royal Princess , Diana , in 1984 and was berthed behind us when we left Southampton on Canberra to cruise home to Auckland. She followed us across the Atlantic and unfortunately we struck 3 hurricanes in 5 days. Being her maiden voyage she had all the heads from P&O on board and they arrived in New York rather the worse for wear. Diana was also the Godmother for the ship. The ship was also a novel layout , in as much as there were no or very few inside cabins. All staterooms had an outside window or balcony.....very avante garde for the time. However in order to do this the cabins were designed to be long and very narrow . The 2 singles ran the length of the cabin and during the day 1 was folded up into the wall. If they were converted to a double the only way to get to the balcony was to climb over the bed. Despite all that she remained a popular member of the British Fleet until sold as outlined above. Rare MMDown Under Posted February 11, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) Thank you both for the information and photos. Love the rear of the ship, perfect for sailaways. On further research, I discovered the ship is on a world cruise from Genoa to Marseilles, for 111 days from 22/12 - 12/4. She will be in Sydney for 3 days. I think the German ships have the best and most interesting itineraries. German people really know how to travel and see the world. jessica3152 Posted February 11, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2014 She was a very beautiful ship when she sailed for Princess and has been said very ahead of her time. She was launched about the same time as Fairsky (Pacific Sky) but overshadowed it due to her modern appearance and number of balconies. Since Phoenix Reisen bought her, they have added many more balconies but, fortunately, haven't spoilt her appearance.
