cage keeper Posted February 12, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2014 They keep them cool. I need my water very cold so we fill the ice bucket and put the bottles in there. All depends on how cold you want it. Joni
Brigbound Posted February 12, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 12, 2014 If you fill it with ice and place it in the closet along with a stationary fan and Chuck Norris staring at it.... yes, it might get cold.
Jasp 0401 Posted February 12, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2014 I see the mini bar fridges in rooms, do they really keep things cold? They will keep cold stuff cold but not icy cold. They don't get things cold as they are more of a cooler than a fridge.
Rare NorbertsNiece Posted February 12, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2014 Good enough to keep a plate of cheese and fruit cool enough to eat in the evening if placed there in the morning.....
oneputt18 Posted February 12, 2014 #6 Share Posted February 12, 2014 We started bringing one of those collapsible fabric coolers. We ask the cabin attendant to fill it with ice once a day. I bring Pepsi (hate Coke) and it keeps the soda nice and cold. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forums mobile app

ShakyBeef Posted February 12, 2014 #8 Share Posted February 12, 2014 I guess it depends on the ship / cabin / particular fridge? I was pleasantly surprised by how well our mini fridge worked. We would put a couple cans of RedBull in the fridge in the morning and they would be nice and cold by the afternoon. It also kept my room service milk nice and cold.:) (If it matters, we were on Grandeur in a grand suite.) This being my first cruise on RCI, I don't know if our fridge was the norm or the exception. But it was certainly better than those we have had on Carnival.
vavasmom Posted February 12, 2014 #9 Share Posted February 12, 2014 My experience is they are inconsistent (even on the same ship and class of cabin). Some work as well as a refrigerator; others keep things cool not cold; and others barely below room temp.
MedicKen Posted February 12, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2014 If you are asking about keeping medication cold, they won't. In that case ask the Special Needs Department (30 days prior to your cruise) for a refrigerator. Or you can place your excess meds in the infirmary and access them at a pre-arranged time. If your asking for soda, go for the ice bucket routine.
corts2c Posted February 12, 2014 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2014 The mini bar "fridge" is really just a cooler. To keep things really cold,we ask our stateroom attendant for a bucket of ice and then we get a few glasses from Windjammer and fill them up with the ice. Set them in the fridge with your beverages/food and be sure to put fresh ice in every day. We found that drinks will stay really cold if you do this. To speed things up you can put your beverages into the ice bucket and chill them before placing in the fridge.

cb at sea Posted February 12, 2014 #14 Share Posted February 12, 2014 You can actually put ice in a glass and pour your drink over it...that works, too! I've found that if the frig is in a cabinet, if you keep the cabinet door ajar, the frig cools MUCH better....refrigerators need airflow!

dixieva Posted February 13, 2014 #16 Share Posted February 13, 2014 It gets warm in the cabinet where the fridge is located. We prop the cabinet door open ( we use a washcloth) and that helps to circulate the are and get the fridge colder. Last cruise every time the room steward cleaned the room he would remove the wash cloth. We would put it back. It took a few days before he got the idea and left it there. shippmates Posted February 13, 2014 #17 Share Posted February 13, 2014 We were on the Grandeur in November and had requested a refrigerator to keep my husbands meds cold and it did a great job. Before we got the refrigerator I went down to the infirmary and they would keep his meds. I am wondering if this is different on every ship. Mlkkc Posted February 13, 2014 #18 Share Posted February 13, 2014 Never notice does the bath room sink have a plug it up fill with ice put can drinks or wine in sink use as cooler when it melts refill
ProbablyRachel Posted February 13, 2014 #19 Share Posted February 13, 2014 I see the mini bar fridges in rooms, do they really keep things cold? "Cool" is more accurate. But I was comfortable keeping medication in there that had to be refrigerated. My husband leaves his water glass in the fridge when we leave the room... it more or less is a cooler plugged into the wall.
Hypo Posted February 13, 2014 #20 Share Posted February 13, 2014 We too, leave the wood door open to the frig cubicle. By doing so you aid in the removal of the compressor heat from the cabinet. Unfortunately, this trick won't work on Allure and Oasis (maybe other ships too). On Allure and Oasis the wood door is attached with a strap to the frig door. Whenever you open the wood door it also opens the frig door. I suggested that they remove the plastic strap, but of course they never listen to us simple passengers. Robinola Posted February 14, 2014 #21 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I like to bring a collapsible 6 x 6 cooler. I always tell my room steward to fill the ice bucket and my cooler. Anything I want really cold, like milk cartons, I put in my collapsible cooler. Works GREAT!
starryeyedlady Posted February 14, 2014 #22 Share Posted February 14, 2014 Speaking of fridges, if I don't want anything in fridge do I just ask the attendant to clear it out first day?
wowprincess Posted February 14, 2014 #23 Share Posted February 14, 2014 Speaking of fridges, if I don't want anything in fridge do I just ask the attendant to clear it out first day? Yes - though on the last cruise they just emptied it into a box and put it under the bed. That's fine - worked for us.
Paulette3028 Posted February 14, 2014 #24 Share Posted February 14, 2014 We ask our room steward to keep our ice bucket filled. We bring 2 wide mouthed water bottles (that we would use in the gym). The reason for wide mouthed, is that these are easier to use to put the ice into, then we fill it up with water; then we put the bottles in the frig; the ice defrosts a little bit and it becomes very chilled water. lazeyey Posted February 14, 2014 #25 Share Posted February 14, 2014 No they are not cold. I wonder why they even have fridges when they're warm.
