SeaBands Posted February 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2014 and there's no fee. Just like putting your card in the slot machine. I think you need to use a slot to set up your account first.
carri cruiser Posted February 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2014 and there's no fee. Just like putting your card in the slot machine. I think you need to use a slot to set up your account first. You will need to have an account to get any money out of the machine, even if you started with cash!! be sure to read the buttons correctly, one is to charge your room, one is to use credits accrued and one is to cash out, but in any event you will need to have your account.... one of the casino workers will help you to set it up, if you ask!! jadona48 Posted February 20, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 20, 2014 My understanding of their policy is that if you have posted a credit card, you can get a cash advance at the tables for 2%. You may want to confirm with HAL as there seems to be a different answer from fellow cruisers.
CHOPPERTESTER Posted February 20, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Avoid the fees...at the casino cashier and the ship services desk HAL does not have ATMs on-board. Set aside you gambling budget and leave it in your bank account at home. Pay for your shipboard expenses using a "points" card. Set up your casino account using your room key/sail sign card at one of the slot machines. Charge $200 or $300 to your shipboard casino account and it will show up as credits on the slot machine. Pull the slots once (it will not let you cash out at the casino cashier without a slot pull). Cash out the slot machine credits to your onboard casino account. Go to the casino cashier window and clear out your casino account to get cash. Use the cash at the tables. At the end of the cruise, your points card will pay off your shipboard account (and what you charged from the casino). When you get home, pay off your points card with the money you set aside (or the money you bring back from winning LOL). Don't exceed your budget. legalslave Posted February 21, 2014 #7 Share Posted February 21, 2014 If you gift yourself casino chips before you leave on your cruise, there is no extra charge. If you draw from your ship board account in the casino, there is a 3% charge. Diane
CHOPPERTESTER Posted February 21, 2014 #8 Share Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) If you gift yourself casino chips before you leave on your cruise, there is no extra charge. If you draw from your ship board account in the casino, there is a 3% charge. Diane Thanx Diane about the pre-cruise casino chips, forgot about that one. Just to be clear and list all the scenarios. When you draw from your shipboard account it goes into your casino account. Each account is separate from one another. At the end of the cruise you have to cash out your casino account and take the cash. The casino cannot transfer your winnings to your shipboard account to help pay down your other expenses. There will be several announcements 2nd to last, and the last night the casino is open to do so. If you have a balance in your casino account you will also get a voice message on your cabin phone to remind you to cash out your casino account. If you fail to cash out your casino account before the casino closes for the last time on your cruise (If you overnight at the end of your cruise the casino will close earlier of course) then you will eventually get a cheque if you balance was over, I think, $10. Any casino accounts not cashed out that have a balance of $10 or less will have the proceeds donated to charity and you will not get a cheque or be able to recover it after the cruise. If you are on a collector or B2B verify with the casino if you have to cash out your casino account at the end of the first leg of your cruise. The 3% charge is only if you draw from your ship board account while playing at the tables, craps or roulette or draw cash from the cashier at the casino. There is no charge if you draw from your ship board account at the slot machines. There is no charge if you buy casino chips pre-cruise. There is no charge at the casino cashier if you cash a traveller's cheque. There is no charge if you use cash LOL. There is no charge to cash out your casino account balance at the casino cashier. CHOPPERTESTER Posted February 21, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) Go to your HAL cruise booking and it is in the Indulgences section. Same place you pre-order wine or flowers for the cabin. The casino chips are in increments of $10.00 for $10.00 each. https://book.hollandamerica.com/pdfs/onboard/Gift_Order_Polar.pdf Edited February 21, 2014 by CHOPPERTESTER

I just got off the Eurodam today and neither myself nor my my wife were charged the 3% for buying chips at the craps table. Not sure whether it was my mariner status, change on policy or administrative screw-up.

doublebzz Posted February 23, 2014 #14 Share Posted February 23, 2014 You got lucky as the 3% is supposed to be charged. Maybe, but neither myself nor my wife were charged at two different times. Also, in the past, before they gave you the cash advance they advised of the 3% charge which did not happen in both cases this time.

They'll always make it convenient to put money in. ;) Getting it out requires creating an account with your stateroom key, moving the money from the machine to your key, and then getting cash at the casino cashier. I'm sure it's easy once you get the hang of it, but we don't generally gamble on land, so we always have to get a casino employee to help us if we win something. Of course, you don't generally win in the long run...

DW won something in the neighborhood of $30 and we stood around, feeling stupid, trying to figure out how to get her money out. I suppose that people who play slot machines all the time don't have any trouble because they're familiar with the process. Not so for us.
dadroy Posted March 28, 2014 #21 Share Posted March 28, 2014 Is it just me or does it seem selling gambling chips in $10 increments a little ridiculous? Seriously, how many people are going to gamble $10? They should have options of maybe $10, $50, $100 and $250. I don't consider myself a big gambler but $250 is ten hands of blackjack!:D
