Disembarking at Civitavecchia

We're booked on the Cunard QE in July and need to make travel arrangements in Juky 25th from the Civitavecchia port to our hotel in Rome. Cunard does not offer any transfer to Rome downtown, only to the airport.

We are considering pre-arranging a private car or shuttle, but all want a close to precise time for pick-up on the pier. We do not want to use the express disembark where we carry the bags off the ship ourselves at 7am as this is too early and too much for us to carry.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience or advice. If we say 10am is that too much or about right for disembarkation?

Any advice much appreciated.

Time of disembark can be variable based on customs, etc. I would highly recommend Rome Cabs (romecabs.com). We have used them several times. Always on time, always clean, nice vehicles. And, they check on times of arrival and adjust accordingly. Again, cannot recommend them enough.:D

Thanks Jim .. Have read some reviews on Rome Cabs and they get good reports.

What do people usually do when arriving via cruise boat. There are somethings you can't control coming off a cruise ship. Some of the websites say pickups are alongside the ship. Does this assume you are carrying your luggage off or is the luggage held for pickup right on the pier.

For prearranged pickups, they all want an estimated time for pick up. Assume the boat will be in port by 5am and will start letting people off promptly by 7am. Thinking we would be off no later than 930. Not sure about customs or other delays but maybe 1030 would be a conservative estimate.

Any other suggestions much appreciated.

There is some further information in this recent thread, though it does not answer your exact question.

I would certainly recommend that you go with a TRUSTED company. I sailed into Civitavecchia on a different line and saw passengers milling around wondering what to do as the company they had booked to take them to their Rome hotel had not turned up. In the end they found someone on the street selling transfers. (I was on my way, walking, to the train station ready to transfer to the airport.)

When we have used Rome Cabs, they find out when your ship will be disembarking. They have also found out when our arriving flight was delayed. They are very in tune with the way it works in Italy and have never let us down no matter what the delays might have been. :D

Several years ago (2008), we took the train from Rome to Civitavecchia and, then, shared a taxi to the ship with other Americans we met on the train.

Your ship will not be within walking distance of the train depot in Civitavecchia, but it will be only five minutes away in a taxi.

There was probably an elevator in the Civitavecchia station, but we didn't see it---so we ended up carrying (and dragging) our bags up and down some stairs at the station. ...I was younger then ; ) and our baggage was manageable. We had trained from London to Rome and didn't let a few steps daunt us.

The train was VERY economical. I think it took about an hour. Trains seemed to run frequently. We just missed one train (saw it pull away) and the next was, maybe, a half hour later.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer and can handle your luggage independently, you could do the same in reverse.

We did witness a pick-pocket in action at the Rome train station. As soon as he saw he was being observed, he disappeared in a hurry. He was more pesky than worrisome. If you are at the Rome train station (or ride a city bus) in Rome, just have your antenna up and be city-smart.

Happy Travels! Give the QE a big hello from DH and me : )

  • 4 weeks later...

Sort of on the same topic, we will be staying at a hotel near Piazza Navona that doesn't allow check in before 1 pm. Do they rush you off the QE or can we enjoy a leisurely morning and breakfast and leave the ship later in the morning. We can then leave our luggage at the hotel.

Any idea of what Romecab will cost to go there?

Thanks

You could always contact the hotel and ask if it will be possible to leave your luggage there, even if you can't check in. Most hotels have somewhere for luggage for guests who have checked out that day or guests waiting to check in.

We used Rome in Limo on our arrival. The driver took the two of us on an all day tour of Rome - included the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Coliseum and many many more... he eventually (just in time for dinner) dropped us off at the hotel. They did all the coordination with getting tickets and a personal tour guide at the Vatican.

It was fairly expensive - but we got a grand tour on our one (rainy) day in Rome.
