Hey Celebrity !!! Loud Music Does NOT Equal Younger Demographic
Just off Reflection and did not encounter ANY music at "deafening" or "concert level" volumes.

DJ music was appropriately loud late at night at the Sky Lounge and of course at the Martini Bar - it's clearly part of what makes this place hop and attract a large crowd. DJ music may have been loud at times (especially if sitting near the speakers) around the pool (not my scene so we sunned ourselves on the deck above - not loud at all) but it didn't seem to drive anyone away.

Live music in the public areas (even after a week I never did quite remember if there were one or two of these spaces) whether it was top 40 by Vibes or swing by the big band (can't remember their name) was loud but certainly not ear splitting - does anyone REALLY expect this sort of music to be played softly??? Live music in the theatre was obviously loud but no louder than any similar productions I have attended off ship.

Not once did we encounter "piped music" in public areas, atrium(s), restaurants etc. at levels anywhere near obtrusive. Not once did we have to raise our voices to enjoy conversation. Not once could we not find a pleasant spot (and typically several) somewhere on the ship to enjoy relative silence (I say relative as there's always some bozo who can't discern between talking and shouting). Not once were we unable to find a bar which was unsuitable for quiet conversation.

These discussions always remind me of my late MIL - a delightful woman but one with an infuriating habit of parking herself in front of one of my 4 foot high speakers at parties or large family gatherings and asking that the music be turned down. People, if you find the music too loud in one venue, why not simply move to another?

Once I've gathered my thoughts I'll be offering my review of Reflection on this board. In the meantime, I will simply say that the music on this (our first ever) cruise was a positive contribution to what was one of the most enjoyable weeks of our lives.
Well said! Thanks for the update, I'm sure it will assure some future cruisers, who are already anticipating problems on their upcoming cruises, that it is not a problem on all cruises on the Reflection.

Thanks! The short answer is, we are SO ready to sail again!!! The cruise surpassed our every expectation. The magic started the moment the ship came into view and just DID NOT STOP for a full seven days! Much more to come - stay tuned!

Thanks for your feedback; can I ask, who was the Cruise Director?
Ian Cresswell. Met him at our cruise connections party - very nice guy.
Ian was the CD on our Solstice cruise last year.
Volumes were fine there, also.
Appropriately loud where they needed to be and quieter in other places.
I wonder if the CD is the one who determines volume?

It might be interesting if people posted who the CD was on the cruises that were too loud.

Greetings,
We had just got back from shopping in St. Thomas and went up to the pool and some sun and quiet. Around 2, this loud music started and one guy playing electronic percussion music to go along with the music. I ended up leaving the pool area, along with several others. I forgot to mention it in the survey.
Thanks for the topic.

I have been on about 20 cruises, virtually all with Celebrity. One of my problems with this discussion is the extremes. Some are saying that they have never had to raise their voices over the music and have never encountered music that is inappropriately loud anywhere. Others seem to imply that it is too loud everywhere recently. I haven't sailed on either of those ships. On recent cruises, I have found sound levels all over the place. My biggest concern is the dining room where people should be able to converse in quiet tones (drunks and people competing for attention are usually more of a problem than the music.) and the atrium, where noise spills all over the ship, and where cranked up amps sometimes send the CD's cleverness everywhere. For pool lovers, I'm not sure the debate can be resolved. As to the drinking venues, as many have suggested, Celebrity ought to be able to figure out diversity in type of music and volume. Although personally I could do without Sinatra and techno.

I for one, wouldn't have a problem with really low background music in the MDR (not sure how you will get rid of the drunks and people competing for attention LOL) and in the atrium, as long as there were other venues where they would play some more up tempo newer/hip type music at a louder volume for those that want to have a good time.

No, I wouldn't change a policy for just 1 percent, I have to think about the other 99 percent who haven't complained.

Hmm, well in this situation it seems the majority hadn't complained, yet the volume had been adjusted anyway...

As for your question, you can still make adjustments while considering the impact on others, or there may well be no impact on others.

I'm hoping it's mostly isolated to Caribbean cruises. I for one enjoy a louder, radiant vibe in the Caribbean but for a 11 day European cruise I'm not looking forward to a party all night high octane evening! I guess I will find out in May...

Very interesting! Now I have a better sense of Wpgcycles post about his cruise last week.

The CD on our cruise on Reflection with the ridiculously loud music was Alexander. The CD last week was someone else.(Ian Cresswell). Judging by the comments, a week made a big difference!

Even after many people said the music was too loud at our CC gathering on the 2/22 sailing, the CD made it clear that the volume would not be adjusted, and we better get used to it! (Or choose a different line in future)

We just got back from our Constellation trip. Maybe my hearing is already impaired from using headphones while running/working out but I didn't think the music was too loud. It had the right loudness level by the pool but as soon as you went to the Solarium you could not hear it. In fact, on day I was sitting in the Solarium when my husband call to go and join them by the pool. I was surprised to see that the dj was playing there. Music was bar level loud at the Martini Bar and only soft background music in the MDR.

I think people might be confusing the type of music and it been loud but that is just my opinion.

Cruise director on 22/2 sailing was Alex. This was his last cruise.I found him very arrogant.

He was very rude to all present at the cruise critic meeting. In fact the hotel director came up and apologized and sent us lots of goodies through out the cruise.Being told that I should find an alternate cruise line because Celebrity was no longer catering to my age group was really insulting.I have sailed on Celebrity almost 30 times.....So pleased to hear the volume is back to previous levels and you can actually have a conversation is great news.

I agree. We were on the Reflection 2/22 and absolutely LOVED it. It was our first cruise and we booked another. As long as music did not disturb my sleep, and it did not, I found it to be perfectly manageable.

We went to CC meet and greet and was not happy with some of Alexander's comments as well. We talked to his higher up after regarding how he handled it with us being new to it all. Other then that, we enjoyed Alexander and his warm personality. Is he on vacation or no longer with Reflection?

As has been mentioned, 2 people, 2 different experiences from the same event. Except for Alexander, same experience. No reason, excuse, situation, by 1 or 100 voicing dissatisfaction with any item that would make that kind of attitude acceptable to anyone. 5 months since his last vacation  it is 11 months between ours.

That has been exactly my point all along. It is a difference of opinion and taste. Doesn't mean either were right or wrong, it is just that people "hear" things differently. While 100 might think it is loud, another 100 might not have a problem with it. That is why Celebrity can't make a sweeping change because of just a few of their customer. The best solution would be to have different venues with different music and their appropriate volumes. There needs to be a balance, not just one way or the other, but unfortunately some don't want it any other way, then the way they want it.

And I thought the "Chair Hog" threads went on and on and on and on........................

But at least it is dying down now. I only have to check it once or twice a day instead of every 15 minutes.;) it seems that even the most prolific posters are running out of ways of saying the same thing over and over and over and over.

Anyone been on the Infinity lately? How was the volume? We'll be on board in 3 weeks.

As another veteran of Winterland, I love rock music. OTOH, I just got a replacement pair of hearing aids last month ;)

On the Feb 16 antarctic cruise the sound level was quite low throughout the ship including the theater and restaurants. I was actually surprised that there was no louder music in the martini bar (not that I minded....but I did notice).

There was a terrific guitar player who would play long sets in the atrium and you could hear him very well on decks 4 or 5. That was terrific. I didn't spend much time around the pool (look at the destination). Zumba classes were in the auditorium.

This was an unusual cruise. I didn't notice a great number of singles mingling around the martini bar...even though the average age on the cruise seemed to be about 10 years lower than most other celebrity cruises recently. The casino was mostly empty, although we did manage to keep one blackjack table busy...and there were a few craps players. The texas holdem machine was not working during our cruise.
