so it is better to take a taxi than any NCL provided shuttle or whatever other options are available? do I need any paper work of some sort to prove I have already paid?

I did the Orient Beach excursion through NCL (I think it was called "Orient Beach Rendevouz") in January 2013, and if I should do that again, I would go on my own. We were a rather large group, and the sunbeds that were "reserved" for us was in the back row - even though the majority of sunbeds in front of us were free. It also seemed like the administration at the particular part of the beach that was for the excursion (called "Waikiki") were not prepared for our arrival, it was a lot of confusion before we finally got any sunbeds. Some of the group almost started fighting over the sunbeds available...

If you go on your own, you are free to choose which part of the beach to stay at, some parts are nicer than others. :)

Finally I would just say that usually I book all my excursions through NCL out of convenience, and usually I am content with the quality - but not this one....

You can definitely do Orient Beach on your own. When you get off the ship, continue toward the exit. There will be signs posted for the taxis. These are shared and the prices are posted and regulated. You can also arrange a time with your driver to take you back. When you get to the beach, there will be various beach clubs, some cost more than others. Just look at the lounge chairs - if there are full, these WERE the cheaper places. Some even include a drink. You want to stay to the left as the right side is where the nudists resorts are. You can walk over there, however. No cameras.

Do it on your own. Its easy and safe. Just get a taxi you will most likely share it with other people. They like to fill up their taxis to save time and money since Orient Bay is across the island.

The earlier you go like 9 am the closer to the water you are. I think they open at around 9 or 10 its island time man so don't go before that.

Remember to leave with plenty of time to get back to the ship you have to cross the island and one accident can really back up traffic.

There are lots of bars with food and bathrooms. You rent the chairs the price depends on how early and busy they are. The closer to club Orient (naked part) the cheaper they are.

Bring lots of sunblock lots of sunblock and reapply often.
