Problem getting over 75 Travel Ins in NZ

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else in the over 75 age bracket finding it difficult to get travel insurance in NZ recently? I have had angioplasty and stents over 5 yrs ago and had a fully insured cruise in 2012. Wish to go on another cruise 2015 from US to NZ. (OR Asia to NZ) I have tried but cannot get cover for my pre existing conds. Have tried so many co's lost count and even a broker who told me there is "no insurance product available in New Zealand that will provide the cover necessary for a trip to the United States or indeed anywhere and this has been the situation since the Christchurch earthquake and the ability of the local insurers to obtain reinsurance cover from the overseas markets"! I'd be interested to know if others are having similar difficulties.

I am in my 70s but not yet 75. I'm not sure of the NZ situation but I have just taken out travel insurance in Australia with InsureandGo - not sure if it is available in NZ. Covermore who I have used in the past, would not cover my pre-existing at all because I was going to the USA. Another one wouldn't cover anyone over 65. I had to pay a premium of what amounted to an extra $1,000 for my pre-existing with InsureandGo but at least I got cover. Best of luck.:)

This is a problem world wide. We have a good friend in England who has had to give up cruising now that he is 80 , as the cost of insurance is more than the cruise. Most lines over there will not accept a booking unless you have insurance. You have to either take theirs , or provide details of your own cover , before any bookings will be accepted.

We had the same problem, going to the US is the problem. My husband had a couple of stents which was purely precautionary ten years ago. He is 72 and only needs to see his specialist for a annual check up. We never had any problems with insurance to the US until last year. Co's that use Great Lakes as an underwriter seem to be the most difficult to deal with.

Insure and Go were very good to deal with and suggested we take out an annual policy which is what we did so we're set to go for another cruise in June.

Hope you can get some cover.

"1 cover" provide travel insurance for two groups Under 81 and over 81. Google their website and check out terms and conditions. If one's health conditions fall outside their parameters that's tough I guess and nothing we can do about it

I am over 75 and for my last cruise I used Southern Cross Travel Insurance which covers the USA as I visited the USA. You can get it on line. I had to make a claim for a stolen iPhone and they paid me within a fortnight.

WARNING

You ned to be really carful with the pre-existing for over 75s. Many of the policies do not have a box to tick for pre-exsisting conditions. You put in the details and it gives a price and asks for payment (for a nice price).

If you go in a read the small print you may find that if you have X, Y or Z you will have NO cover!.

I also have been through many many application forms for 88 yo Dad going on a cruise via US (Hawaii).

I got cover with Qantas QBE. Don't know if you can get that out of NZ.
