Edge? or Occeaner?

My son who is 11 enjoyed the Occeaner club and had no intrest in going to edge. This year when we sail he will be 12 (looks and acts like age 10..lol)and he still wants to go to Occeaner lab. I also feel more comfortable checking him in/out. Will he be allowed or is he forced to go to edge?

Also, are they still doing "trial runs" for the toddlers? He will be 2 days shy of 3 years old when we sail in August and so far is not potty trained.

Oceaneer's Club/Lab is ages 3-12, so your son can go there, if he wishes. You can remove the self-check in/out privilege. I will point out, he can still attend Edge as well. It might be a good time to let him check it out in small bits for future cruises.

As to the almost 3 year old. If they are not potty-trained, they are not allowed in Oceaneer's Club. An almost 3 year old (within 30 days) can typically get a "trial run" IF they are potty trained.

The Lab age is 3-12 (as above). A child who is 11 or 12 can choose the Lab or the Edge (Edge is 11-14). However, to go to the Edge they MUST be allowed to sign themselves in and out.

SO, if you keep the sign out (don't allow him to do it), he will not be able to go to the Edge. If you allow it, whether they are allowed to move between the Lab and Edge seems to vary with the cruise. If you do allow him to go to the Edge, remove the Lab band (they get horribly teased otherwise).

And as above, yes to trial run for any child who is at least 2 years 11 months and mom says is fully trained. Any untrained child is nursery only. Fully trained means that the child can handle clothing, wiping, hand washing, etc. in a child sized facility without adult assistance. One suggestion--make their lives easy. First, think about clothing without fasteners so they can pull up and down quickly. Make them go before you take them to the Club (no go = no Club). Then show up about 90 minutes later to check on them and escort them to the facility. Even kids who are well trained at home get into playing and forget to go! If you check on them, you sort of prevent this.

Oh thats good news and I did not know he could attend Edge as well. He might like that.:)

ok, maybe my three year old will be potty trained by then and we can give it a try. Although I loved the security of the nursery. sigh decisions decisions:confused:

Thank you this is great advice! Do you know if they have the new magic bands yet? Does the nursery have them also?

I'm confused with all the board chatter about "new bands." They have bands with a locator in them. They've had them for a while in some configuration. They can punch in the child's name on the computer and it locates the band...which theoretically tells you where in the programming area the kid is. The locator system does not work "all over the ship," just in the programming area.

Apparently, the new bands they just have to tap (like they do to open the doors) the bands to check in and out. And they're smaller, more like the rubberband-type bracelets that kids wear. They put a deposit on your onboard account (like $12/$13 each) which is credited back if you return the bands at the end of the cruise.

I know last year they had the skinny plastic bands with the big alarm type device that they would use to check in/out, locate etc. But the rumor is the DCL is now using the magic bands they use at Walt Disney World for the same purpose.

On Fantasy last week they had the smaller rubber bracelets....simple to tap the Mickey symbol to check in/out. Got the $12 back by returning it at the end of the week. Really convenient!

  • 2 weeks later...
Does anyone know if they will allow a 10 1/2 year old to go to the Edge?

This varies from one cruise to the next depending on numbers in each age group as well as the CMs on duty. If the 10 year old is within 30 days of tuning 11, the answer is "yes." I'm going to be the mean person here. The Edge program is for 11-14, and yes, my daughter got bored in the lab (think we did too many cruises in that age range). Besides, the older program always looks more attractive to the kids. The Lab programming is designed for kids thru age 12. Thus, there is already a 2 year overlap built into the system.

However....if younger kids are allowed to move up, the kids at the upper end of the age range stop attending. A 13 or 14 year old (age appropriate for Edge) doesn't want to hang or be on a team with a 10 year old. There are many team activities--video scavenger hunt, make a commercial, etc.
