Typical Cruise Day

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi

I will be going on my first cruise in august on IOS its a 14 day med cruise and I have no idea what to expect from it. I'm curious on how people fill their at sea days. I would love to hear from experienced cruisers what a typical at sea day is like.

Thanks

Lori

Well, this is our first Royal Caribbean cruise in a very long time. We usually do Carnival, which doesn't have as many activity options on the ship. On a typical day, we would do a lot of relaxing outdoors, have leisurely meals in the MDR, do some napping or reading, and maybe see some of the pool activities. On Oasis in June, especially with our 2 kids, I plan on more active sea days- swimming, seeing shows, watching people on the flowrider, letting the kids ice skate, etc.

You will want to relax ! European ports can be exhausting, three is so much to see and do little time. Catch up on your relaxing during sea days. With a big ship like that you will not get bored....

I normally start my day in the gym. Then head back to the cabin and we go to breakfast. After that I usually get some sun time in by the pool. Have lunch. Either do some more pool/sun time or walk around the ship. Hit the casino for a little while. Meet with friends for a drink. Also depending on what is scheduled by the ship I may fit in a lecture or trivia or some other planned activity. I'll also get in some reading time. This usually gets me through until dinner.

Sea days are my favorite.

I usually get up before 7:00 am. The first thing I do is head out to my balcony, enjoying the view. I then get dressed, and head out to find my first cup of coffee. (DH stays in bed sleeping). While enjoying my coffee, I meander around the ship. I walk outside along the promenade deck, listening to the ocean sounds, and watching the waves dance. I refill of coffee, then go up to the pool deck. I walk around there for awhile, the sun is warm, but the breezes may have a chill. I head back down to the Promenade, top off my coffee, and get one for DH. It is usually between 8:00 and 8:30 when I get back to my stateroom and wake up DH with his morning coffee. I enjoy my coffee, the ocean and my balcony while DH gets dressed. We then together, head out to breakfast. We plan our day while eating.

After breakfast, we walk around the ship for a bit together. I usually have some type of activity planned for me in the morning. Some mornings there is a parade scheduled, or perhaps a C & A event, or even a Roll Call event. We usually go to these together. If there is a scrapbooking or jewelry making class, I will usually attend that; DH will find a lounger, usually on the pool deck, turn it around to face the ocean and stay there while I am gone. When I come back, we watch the ocean for a bit of time, then go to lunch.

After lunch, I put on my swim suit, and we grab our books. DH and I will head to the pool deck, in search of two loungers. I will read for a while, then jump into a hot tub for about 15 minutes. I will read a few more pages, then go back to the hot tub, get out and read a bit longer. DH, on the other hand reads and watches the ocean. After I am dry, I will go back to the cabin, shower, and change. It is usually about 3:00 by this time.

I don't usually have any activity planned at this time. DH is still on the pool deck. I will walk around the ship, visit some of the shops. I must admit that I love the coffee cake that Royal offers in the Promenade Cafe, . I will usually have a small piece of that and a cup of coffee. I may do a little bit of window shopping before finding DH. We will walk around a bit; perhaps stopping in one of the lounges, before heading back to our cabin to change for dinner.

After dinner, we usually walk around the outside promenade deck until it is time for the evening's entertainment. After the show, we will go to one of the lounges for a drink. We will then head outside to the pool deck, and do some star gazing. We may also visit the shops on board. We then search out another lounge, or perhaps the casino. If there is a late night show offered (Love and Marriage, Quest, Comedy) we will go to that. We then go back to the Promenade Cafe for a late night snack before going to our cabin. (Once or twice during the week, we instead order room service for a late night snack on our balcony). We enjoy our balcony for a bit, then DH goes to bed. I stay out on the balcony, for a little while, then get into bed, I will read for about 1/2 hour in bed (something I never do at home). It is after midnight when DH turns in for the night, it is usually after 1:00 am before I turn off the lights. Gotta get a little sleep, as my day will start before 7:00 am (much earlier if I am going to search out the sunrise)

As I said, I love sea days. They are my favorite part of cruising. I have no immediate worries, I don't have anything I have to do. I don't have to cook, clean, or go grocery shopping. I don't have to go to work, take out the dog or deal with a "crisis". It is a little piece of heaven while still on earth.

There are also dance classes onboard on sea days. A fun we to kill an hour. There will be bands playing at different venues around the ship throughout the day.

But as a previous poster said, I'd try to relax on sea days because you will be busy on port days.

Enjoy your cruise!

Your 1st cruise is for 14 days?

I would have started off with something a lot shorter to see if you even liked it.

Being on a ship is not for everyone, in fact many people hate it for different reasons. I can totally understand.

I really like the cruise experience.

But after a week, I am happy to get off..

Thank you for your replies I guess you can be as active as you want. Plenty of ideas now on how to fill the days and I better load up the ereader and get ready to learn how to just relax some too :)

Is walking on the track a no no is it just for hardcore runners. After looking at the food choice i'm thinking unless I want to roll off the ship I'll need to get some exercise in

LO! My family said the same thing about 7 day cruises. They said it was too long for a first cruise because I might not like it.

Aren't Mediterranean cruises port intensive? I think that makes a difference.

I wouldn't be concerned about your 14 day cruise. Our first cruise was 8 days, and our 2nd cruise was 9 days.

Good choice on the 14 days - in my opinion a cruise can't be too long.

If you have a good number of sea days:

If they are running Progressive Trivia, do it. Find two other couples that look like fun and form a team. This will become a highlight of the morning. We have met several other couples at trivia that we now take cruises with.

Take advantage of MDR breakfast or lunch every day. Every meal not in the Windjammer is a bit of weight not gained. Also a great way to meet people as you will be seated with others unless you request to be alone. Don't do this - you can be alone at home.

Dance lessons: its easy to learn a few basic steps, and then you can dance at the Captain's party!

Between the games and lessons, gym and pool time, and, of course eating you won't be bored.

Lots to do on Indy you will never get bored. We're going on our fourth cruise on her soon and I can't wait.

One thing you must not miss is the ice show which is usually on one sea day , there's crazy golf if your old like us lol or if your more energetic there's the flow rider, rock wall ,fitness centre , or again like us a walk or two round the jogging track . As previously mentioned there's a full day of activities which you can find on your daily compass a leaflet you get everyday in your cabin.

Of course you can always just find a lounger and relax on deck.whatever you choose to do you'll have a fantastic time Indy is a great ship and you'll wonder where those 14 days have gone.

Depends on when cruise is for Med , i like relaxing at the pool if its warm enough. Also really like the trivia and might spend some time in the casino. RCCL always has lots of activites you can do as much or as little as you want. It will take a few days just to explore the ship

A lovely quiet place to nap, read, etc., is the Viking Crown Lounge at the very top of the ship. Don't overlook exploring that.

Are there likely to be craft lessons on RCI ships and, if so, is there a charge?

Yes, you may find craft lessons on board RCI ships. There is jewelry making and scrapbooking classes. Usually there is no fee for the initial project, but they do sell additional supplies - papers, stickers for scrapbooking or additional jewelry kits. These are usually directed by the Activity Team. You may also find a napkin or towel folding class.

I have also attended a water color class; this class was held by a visiting instructor. Still, no fee attached.

Hope this helps.

Eat - sleep - eat - sleep - eat - sleep - eat - show - eat - sleep.

It doesn't sound like much, but with all the energy you spend on a port - intensive Mediterranean cruise those sea days are much needed recovery days.

I'm so accustomed to the longer cruises now, that 7 days is a tease for me. The longer the better, and sea days are my favorites.

We read the Compass to find enjoyable activities such as trivia, lectures, and other entertainment. Spend time at the pool, reading, walking, the gym, or nothing at all.

How right you are!!!!! A cruise can never be too long------only too short.

In all honesty, I sincerely hope you get somewhat dressed before heading out on the balcony. You may surprise people on the dock or other ships if it's a port day?;)

I love sea days...We usually sleep until 8-9. Once we change, we have breakfast, either in the MDR or the buffet. After breakfast, we wander around the ship and relax by the pool. If there's trivia, we'll usually do that. We also like to play cards either in the library, or at the tables by the pool. (If it's not too windy!). I love to sit on the promenade deck and listen to the waves. After dinner, we usually go see a show, and play in the casino for a little bit. I like the hot tubs at night, though it's been my experience that they're not always open late at night.
