Ports of Call

I know this will probably be deleted but I have a question....How many people plan their ports of call around drinking and how many plan them around the culture?

My daughter and I are both poor school teachers and can only afford to cruise out of NOLA because we can drive to it. So we are pretty much locked in to those ports of call. But we always do something different each cruise. Sometimes the beach, or ruins or just touring the town. If I drink too early I'd be asleep and probably miss getting back onboard. :D

All depends on the type of cruise it is. Our plans for what we do in the Caribbean are way different from our plans on a European cruise.

I plan my trips based on the ship first, and then the ports.

Or, the ports, and then the ships.

We drink plenty on the ship, but don't plan our port stops based on drinking.

More people than you think. We always run into people who look for the best all inclusive they can find at their ports for drinks. Our only "drinking" port is Cozumel and Mr Sanchos. And by what I've seen get back on the boat in Cozumel, I think lots of people have the same idea. :)

OK, curiosity I can see. But really, planning a port around drinking would be an insane thing to do. There is so much available on the ship and I can guarantee that if a cruise ship calls at a port someone has set up bar!

 

We cruise more to relax. If we really want a cultural experience we head for the country itself. 6-8 hours in a port of call will never give you a true experience. Too much commercialism involved. :)

If we go to ports with a brewery we will plan in going there. We are beer enthusiasts and love going to breweries both in the states and Caribbean, but we plan on ports in general and then ships. Once we get booked we plan out our days.

That's what I do, and yes you are right 6-8 doesn't give you enough time. But the way I look at it, it gives me a taste and if I enjoyed the time there, my hubby and I might fly there and spend a week and soak up the culture.

It's actually a valid question.

There are Bar Hop, Party Boat, etc. excursions offered.

In the Caribbean we like to take catamarans that offer alcoholic drinks at the end of snorkeling. Also, we like to go to "All Included" resorts and drink on the beach and we enjoy going to lively party bars in port. :D

I think it is a valid question. We have been a part of 6 roll calls, and it seems that a good percentage of people look for places where they can hang out on the beach and have a drink. However, we plan our ports of call based on the history and culture of the island:)

We plan our ports based on convenience, culture, fun and relaxation factor. Never planned a trip around drinking, but have seen plenty of places to have a drink in pretty much every port we've visited if desired.

I've never though about drinking ashore, but to be honest- yes, we do sample the local pop....a sweet white wine in Malta at only €1 a glass; the Santorini wine- lovely!....something local in Korkula., the occasional ouzo in Greece...and when in Dublin, then you have to try the Guinness! :D

Years ago, when I was pregnant, we went on a 3-day Baja cruise -- a short one because of hubby's work, even though I didn't want to use up vacation days either as I was adding available vacation days to my maternity leave -- and it turned out to be during spring break for many of the local colleges. From the sailaway (tons of beer buckets every where on deck) to the stop in Ensenada, the amount of booze consumption was extremely high. When we were up on deck at the end of the Ensenada stay, we saw many taxis letting off staggering (not kidding) college kids. It was sooooo quiet the next morning, and it had nothing to do with it being Easter. I'm sure many were praying to the porcelain gods at that time.

 

Not being much of a drinker (some years go by without me having even wine so it's not a priority to me), we're not going to plan any ports around anything to do with drinking. If we're at a beach or someplace similar that may have a bar right there, my hubby might get a drink. But he wouldn't be bugging me, during my port planning, as to where the local bars are, and that's not part of my research.

We plan our ports on the basis of if we've been there or not. We love to discover at least one new port or all new ports on every cruise if possible.

Thank you guys for your input....Like I said I don't drink and plan my ports around culture and just to relax. I just find so many people talking about drinking and getting drunk in port and was just curious how many people did.
