Just a quick aside here: The Tattoo was very difficult to photograph with amateur equipment, so apologies for the quality.

Newark Castle in Greenock

The Royal Mile filled with Tattoo-goers

Flags over the portal to the Tattoo

Beginning of the Tattoo; note pyrotechnics from Castle

The band from Mexico. Images projected onto Edinburgh Castle during performances

Very interested as we are on Ruby Princess in August with a similar itinerary. It does sound like I need to rethink some clothing options. Would you say multiple layers were required most days? Did you experience a lot of rain or showers? Leave the shorts at home? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Gail

Who can tell what our summer weather will be!!!!

4/5 years ago, we had floods in June.

Last year we had the hottest July that I can remember for 30 yrs.

This year, we have had no snow in the Pennines and I have summer flowers out now that survived the winter.

Is there any way you could give info on currency. I know there will be different ones in the different countries .Suggestions?

All UK ports take GB £.

The Irish port of Dublin will take €.

Upwarduk is close, but not absolutely correct, for this particular itinerary. We needed Euros in France AND in Ireland (not to be confused with Northern Ireland). Otherwise it was all about the British Pound.

Be aware that Guernsey has it's own currency, but accepts British Pounds with no hesitation, though you may get Guernsey Pounds in change. As best as I can understand, they are completely interchangeable.

We obtained a little of each before leaving the US, then stocked up at ATMs once there. The world is really getting smaller as it concerns obtaining foreign currency. If you are in the US and you do business with Wells Fargo, they tend to be a good source for getting the currency you need without gouging on fees.

Much better than it used to be for travelling in Europe, now that we have the €.

We once went on a bus trip, which ended in Venice, Italy.

It went through Belgium, where I couldn't 'spend a penny' as I didn't have the Belgian currency!
