Cabin Categories...is it just me who doesn't care???

HI, all! I am on these boards reading post after post about NCL. I have 2 cruises booked in July and I always obsess over the boards a few months before I sail. :p

Anyway...Is it just me who really DOESN'T CARE about my stateroom? So many posts are about "The Suite Life", which I have never had the opportunity to experience. I NEVER see anyone posting about their upcoming cruise in an Inside Stateroom. Am I missing something by sleeping in steerage? :D LOL I honestly feel like we have the most amazing cruises, but would upgrading the cabin make it better? ;)

I sail with hubby and our 2 kids (now 12 & 8). I have stayed in Insides most of the time, with a few Balconies and Oceanviews thrown in. My next 3 cruises are in Inside Staterooms. I figure, if I book Inside, I can cruise more often. And we also take a few other vacations during the year as well. ;) I figure, just get me on the ship and I'll have a blast regardless of where I'm supposed to sleep.

So I can't be the only one on these boards who doesn't care about the stateroom...or can I???

I'm the same way… but, then again, I'm still a cruising newbie. My first cruise was in an oceanview and my second was in an inside. My upcoming cruise is in another oceanview. We've never been in a balcony- would LOVE to- but the price hasn't ever been worth it. I have to be choosy with my vacation dollars and I figure that gives me a little extra money to spend in the ports. :) From time to time, I do get envious of the folks who are able to cruise in the suites… but it's just not worth it to me. :D

I do care but I'm sure you aren't the only one who doesn't. Those who don't care about cabins are generally not going to talk about them. Those who obsess over having the perfect cabin will. Just like those who care about dining will talk about which restaurants are best and those who view food as merely fuel won't waste their time discussing restaurants. I'm sure others who fall in the "just there to sleep and shower" category will chime in. It's just that some us consider the cabin part of the experience.

I love the philosophy of cruising in the stateroom that best meets your needs and budget. I will not go into debt to vacation. Period.

If I could cruise/ vacation as much as I wanted, I would do staterooms that stretched my budget as far as I could go (for as long as possible). If that means insides or ocean views, I am good with that!

I am now in a job that offers a good deal of compensation, but nowhere near the vacation time that I would like. I tend to book a higher category of room because I tend to look at quality vs. quantity.

In 8 years when I am eligible for retirement, I will go for insides so I can stay out at sea longer! I honestly believe I may be able to swing a longer cruise (30+ days) if I book an inside.

one where I don't have to row.

I am usually an inside cabin person. I call myself frugal/cheap. I am able to cruise more that way. Also, one of my guilty pleasures on a cruise is the ability to nap without feeling guilty. I sleep very well in the darkness of an inside cabin. If I want an ocean view, I turn the TV to the channel with the bow cam!

I am constantly amazed at the number of people who praise the "Suite Life", when it appears mostly to be the ability to eat breakfast and lunch in Cagneys, and have a butler and concierge at your disposal. I hardly ever eat a large lunch on a cruise, and breakfast is usually lox from the buffet plus a fruit salad. I am envious, however, of the fancy coffee machine. On the other hand, I can buy a whole lot of caffeinated fun and still spend less than a suite.

Before I get bashed, I understand the "to each his own" and have no malice toward the suite-lovers. I just wanted to support the OP about the joys of an inside cabin.

I am one who usually books inside cabins. We have taken approx 80 cruises since the late 70's.

We have been upgraded to all sorts of cabins and like them, but I don't see the value in the higher priced cabins. We are very comfortable in an inside cabin, so don't see any reason to spend the money for anything else.

We are looking at a cruise for later this year, and a balcony is more than double the price of an inside. I will book the inside if we decide to do this one.

I also see the comments about the "suite life" but it doesn't affect us like it does some. My enjoyment of a cruise is not the cabin, but it is the crew and people.

No. You are not. We are all different. Sounds like you are happy with your choices.

I do care. I cruise in suites. Mostly because I travel with mom and I need my own space. We have had a much better experience since the switch.

But it is great we all have choices in cruising and within NCL.

Of the two cruises we've been on, we've chosen balcony. Only because we're new to cruising, want to experience the sights and have our own little private getaway. When we book our first 14+ day cruise, inside all the way! In the end, for us, it's about what we're comfortable with spending for the service we receive.

I wouldn't say I don't care....I would say I am unimpressed, but that choosing a particular cabin in a category I am happy with as to location is important to me. I am fine and happy with an inside cabin but not all insides are equal and therefore I want one where I believe it will be both quiet and located well for the venues that interest me.

My main goal is "Get on the ship". From there I can upgrade through promotions and price drops. I'll probably never book a suite although my income would support such a choice. I just don't personally find the value there.

If you and your family enjoy yourselves in insides room then who cares if anyone else feels the same way.

We did an inside room once and never again. They are not for us and we would rather cruise less often to have at least a balcony.

For the sake of argument lets call inside rooms "country music" and balconies/suites "rock n roll". The discussion of room preference is like types of music people enjoy. If you like it then who cares if others do. It's personal preference.

BTW, I wish we did not feel the way we do about inside rooms.

We do enjoy the suite life very much. It is the entire experience not just eating at a different restaurant. I really do not understand how people that have not experienced something themselves bother to say they don't understand why people cruise in suites. Of course you don't understand if you haven't experienced it. Until you do it, don't judge it.

I'm in your camp. It's not about money. It's about the fact that I am only ever in my cabin to sleep and shower. That is it. As long as we have beds, size doesn't matter. For location, I want close to the stairs.

Different people vacation for different reasons. Many seem to enjoy the suite life because they enjoy meals and relaxation in their cabins. Suites are more conducive to that than an inside stateroom. On the other hand, some of us would never dream of eating in our cabins when we can go out. Also, some of us can't imagine relaxing on a cruise when there is so much to do. Different styles for different folks. It's all good.

I live in a small house / have a 30' Catalina that I live in most of the summer (when the snow melts up north) - and am fine with pretty well any cabin I have on board. I actually prefer inside - as I find it good for sleeping - and like others have said .... you don't spend much time in them .... unless you're on a romantic honeymoon or "fill in blank here" - and perhaps you want more (or have the monies for it). Main thing - as long as you enjoy whatever stateroom you're in!

You should be O.K. but deck 9 would be better if you can . Plus deck 8 has a lot of weird twists and turn , you can get lost easy on deck 8.

I am generally unconcerned about cabin, but my wife cannot go without a balcony - my fault for booking one on a one-nighter years ago...

As for suites and the suite life... there is no comparison and everyone should try it at least once in your life... We've been lucky to have it twice now.... both on the Gem. The Jewel class ships tend to give you a larger variety of suite choices and set-up

Generally if I can get into a full suite for just a little bit more than a balcony is costing I jump on it, but that is not very common. Otherwise we enjoy a balcony cabin when we cruise. My wife has drawn the line in the sand so to speak on that issue.

I think that's one of the great things about this board so many different people.

I care we always have balcony's or Mini's but that's me. I get claustrophobic.

Seeing peoples posts about the suites make me price them but I can not justify the extra costs. I would love to score a deal on one but that has never happened.

I have never felt like I was 2nd or 3 rd class because I don't have a butler. I don't have a butler IRL so I don't miss one on vacation.

My kids would rather be on the normal deck than in Haven anyway.

Just get us on the ship! Usually book thru CAS so whatever room they are willing to give is great by us. Never had a suite, but have upgraded to aft balcony cabins (last trip not one drop of sun on balcony). Once we even requested the same inside cabin(near stairs close to casino). We aren't fussy, as long as room is clean and kept up. We would much rather cruise more often than pay higher prices--everybody going to same place

Safe sailing

On the Jewel class suites there are 2 BDR Family Suites that are not in the Haven... I love those suites the best. The interesting thing about those rooms is that if you can split the cost with another couple the price per person approaches the balcony rate. We did that last December on the Gem and had a fabulous time.

The butler is a nice feature once you realize what he can and can't do for you, but the other perks are even better... like Cagney's for breakfast and lunch, the priority reservations etc... You really do get treated quite well :)

Also, there are non-Haven Penthouses that are also a good bargain on the Jewel class ships. It seems the new Breakaway class ships seem to over emphasize the Haven.

a while back someone actually posted a review detailing their experience in an inside and how much fun they had using so little money~~ no extras, nothing. so it's not just you. if you are having fun AND more often this way than that's GREAT!

My impression has been that there are so many more posts regarding suites because people who have chosen to pay the extra money, especially when it's not pocket change to them, want to be sure they're really going to get full value. So they really get into the details of what is included, what is possible, etc. Which makes sense.

When this question has come up before, there was also the good point made about people who only have the time to vacation every couple of years or even less frequently, so then it does make sense to pay more per trip. You're not getting a second cruise out the of the deal regardless.

I also know cruisers where one family member has mobility issues, so the extra service is important and also just having a nicer cabin with more space because they pretty much don't leave it.

If I were single and the weather was nice, i'd get teh cheapest cabin available.

I can basically plop anywhere and just go back for a shower.

the one time when iw as sailing that i really regret the inside cabin was when there was really rough seas. I need to see the horizon else i get really sea sick.

standing outside on a wet deck was not fun at all.

I can sail in any category, but I do enjoy the balconies the most when they work in our budget for that trip. We have started booking 2 rooms for the 4 of us since our CCL Destiny Cruise....that is one thing I won't compromise on any more. The extra space and bathroom are a luxury I won't give up. We have done 2 insides, an inside and a balcony across the hall and 2 connecting balconies. That is more important to me than the type of cabin.
