Mrs Roo and I are going on our first very cruise with 22 Day Mediterranean MS Noordam cruise departing Venice in July.

I have been read as much info, comments, suggestions posted especially by seasoned cruise travellers.

I am seeking advice from HAL passengers if HAL charges a merchant/transaction fee if we choose to finalise our account by credit or debit card.

Many thanks :)

To my knowledge, there is no transaction fee to use a credit card. The charge on your account will be in U.S. dollars, and your credit card company may charge a fee for the conversion of foreign funds. Check to see how your credit card handles this before you cruise. It may be worthwhile to have a credit card in U.S. dollars for your onboard account?

If you are paying for your cruise through HAL Australia you won't be charged a merchant fee - I wasn't last year, or last week for this year's cruise. That's one of the reasons I now book direct with HAL as the Aussie travel agents in the past always charged the merchant fee.

Once on board though, if you use an Aussie credit card for on board charges then you could be charged a conversion fee.

We've never been charged merchants fees by TTW Sydney (HAL Australian rep.) for any of our cruises - and you'll pay in aus dollars as well. :)

Stupidly I thought I was getting a deal for our upcoming cruise and booked via a TA. Not happy with fees he charged. The grass is not always greener

We have never been charged by HAL. Our CC company charges a fee for using the card to pay in a foreign currency. They bury it in the conversion rate.
