Roo1 Posted May 23, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2014 Mrs Roo and I are going on our first very cruise with 22 Day Mediterranean MS Noordam cruise departing Venice in July. I have been read as much info, comments, suggestions posted especially by seasoned cruise travellers. I am seeking advice from HAL passengers if HAL charges a merchant/transaction fee if we choose to finalise our account by credit or debit card. Many thanks :)
jtl513 Posted May 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) Not for US customers. I don't know about Australia, but I think not. Welcome to Cruise Critic. :) Edited May 23, 2014 by jtl513
Stratheden Posted May 23, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 23, 2014 We weren't charged in May, 2013. I doubt it will have changed.
Island Lovers Posted May 23, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 23, 2014 To my knowledge, there is no transaction fee to use a credit card. The charge on your account will be in U.S. dollars, and your credit card company may charge a fee for the conversion of foreign funds. Check to see how your credit card handles this before you cruise. It may be worthwhile to have a credit card in U.S. dollars for your onboard account? Krazy Kruizers Posted May 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted May 23, 2014 Welcome to Cruise Critic. Since we don't know what credit card you will be using, it would be best to call your credit card company and ask what their rules are. Explain to them that you will be cruising and the cruise line will settle up in US dollars.
OleSalt Posted May 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 23, 2014 HAL doesn't charge a transaction fee, your bank/credit card does. Check with them.
Bescotti Posted May 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted May 23, 2014 If you are paying for your cruise through HAL Australia you won't be charged a merchant fee - I wasn't last year, or last week for this year's cruise. That's one of the reasons I now book direct with HAL as the Aussie travel agents in the past always charged the merchant fee. Once on board though, if you use an Aussie credit card for on board charges then you could be charged a conversion fee.

We've never been charged merchants fees by TTW Sydney (HAL Australian rep.) for any of our cruises - and you'll pay in aus dollars as well. :) Stupidly I thought I was getting a deal for our upcoming cruise and booked via a TA. Not happy with fees he charged. The grass is not always greener  Cathy Edited May 23, 2014 by cranethie
sapper1 Posted May 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) We have never been charged by HAL. Our CC company charges a fee for using the card to pay in a foreign currency. They bury it in the conversion rate. Edited May 23, 2014 by sapper1
sapper1 Posted May 23, 2014 #12 Share Posted May 23, 2014 The only place in the world I have ever had to pay a merchant surcharge was at a restaurant in Tivoli Gardens while in Copenhagen.
