Oslo question

Recommended Posts

Hoping for decent weather next month and would like to be outdoors most of the time.

I'm interested in visiting Akershus Fortress and Vigeland Park.

How close are these to the cruise terminal and each other?

It depends which ship you are on and where it docks.

Celebrity and Princess ships usually dock directly in front of Akershus Fortress which is very near to the city centre, too. Our Cunard cruiseship had its dock near to the new opera house which was farther away.

Vigeland Park is across the city, to the north.

We twice used the HopOn-HopOff bus which stops directly in front of the docks ( there are several others) and also stops directly in front of the Vigeland Park entrance. You can pay with NOK or credit card.

Have fun!

we were on Princess and the fort was right at the dock, but we didn't visit it. Vigeland Park is one of our favorite things in the whole cruise! we took the metro to a nearby stop and then had to walk a couple of blocks.

I was on Celebrity and we docked beside the fort. I used a public bus to get to Vigeland Park (and then on to the Viking Museum). From the museum, I took a public boat back to near the ship. So you have several options, all of which are quite easy if you prepare for them.

You can find your ship's docking location on this list:

http://www.oslohavn.no/no/?template=cruise_list_no

If you're docking at Akershuskai or Vippetangen, the Akershus fortress will be right next to your ship. If you're at Revierkaia, you'll be on the opposite side of the peninsula, but still quite close.

If you happen to be docking at Filipstad, you'd have a 15-20 minute walk back into town unless you catch a bus from one of the stops outside the port area.

The Tram #12 stops outside the fortress (near the city hall) and in front of Vigelands Park, so it's a convenient option for traveling between the two. And since you're above ground, you can see some of the historic residential area on the west side of the city center. Alternatively, it's a 5-minute walk past the city hall up to the Nationaltheatret subway stop, and you can take it one stop to Majorstuen, which is about 10-15 minutes from the main park entrance.

FYI - The different port locations and tram line are both marked on the map in my signature.

Thanks for all your help. If we wanted to do the Viking museum as well do you think there is time? We are docked at Akershuskai. Does the ferry to the Viking museum run from there?

It is a 10-15 min walk to the ferry from the dock

If you plan on doing a couple of museums it may be worthwhile to buy the oslo pass ..you can get it in the port building it include admission to the Fort & Viking ship museum as well as others

It included the ferry when we were there last but not sure if they still do

Check visitoslo.com for more information

Thanks there was talk on a recent thread that the ferry may or may not be included in the pass this year

The ferry is actually just a part of the Oslo public transit system, so as long as the OsloPass includes public transit, it will include the ferry.
