Wine near BWI hotel

Two of us are flying into BWI on different flights, so we seeking a pre cruise hotel near BWI. We do not need anything fancy, but would like a safe, clean place with airport shuttle and maybe a port shuttle. If possible, we'd like a hotel within walking distance of a liquor store (or other wine retailer) to purchase our carry-on wine allowance. I think I have found a couple options by searching on line.

Hampton Inn in Glen Burnie (Chesapeake Liquors a few blocks away per Internet map)

Sleep Inn in Lithicum Heights (Camp Meade Liquors is a couple blacks away per Internet map)

Can anybody offer feedback on these choices or suggest other options?

There aren't any, BUT look at hotels near Arundel Mills..several have airport shuttles, AND there's a liquor store next to the Safeway and many of the shuttles will drive around the mall (it's an outlet mall with smaller strip malls surrounding it) ...

Plus there's the maryland live casino.

Look at the Towne Place Suites, Hampton Inn, Spring Hill suites, aloft Arundel Mills, and maybe a couple I missed...

You're not going to get it all, no port shuttle, you'll need a cab or car service...cab will be around 40 bucks.

There is really no shopping near the airport, and the one or 2 hotels with port shuttles have nothing around..

You can check with the Best Western Elkridge but I think they're in the middle of nowhere as well

Arundel Mills seem to be the opposite direction; I'm not too enthusiastic about that.

Are Chesapeake Liquors and Camp Meade Liquors out of business, too far/unwalkable from those hotels, unsafe, or something else?

It's really not that far from Glen Burnie....they're all within a few minutes of each other..

That area, if it's where I think it is, is not a place I would walk around at night.

I was trying to give you a decent alternative that's safe, and that would NOT require walking....

Sorry, just trying to help.....:(

I'm not too enthusiastic about walking around a busy road in an unfamiliar area at night....

Sorry if my post came off poorly; that was not my intent. I very much appreciate any and all help. I can look at google steet views, but those are a bit dated and give only a limited feel for the area.

If the flights are timely, the wine shopping will be done in the late afternoon in midsummer. Or maybe in the morning if things are delayed. We probably won't be walking much at night in a strange area.

Looking online, I had been leaning toward the Hampton Inn in Glen Burnie. It seems to be in a shopping area (near Dick's Sporting Goods, other shops and restaurants). Their recent trip advisor reviews seem OK. They offer an airport shuttle (limited hours, but hopefully we will arrive within those hours), port shuttle, and local shuttle service within 5 miles. Perhaps we could take the hotel shuttle the local liquor store (assuming one is still in business) if unwalkable. Those services would not make up for an scary neighborhood:eek:. I can call the hotel to try to learn more about the area, but I doubt they'd admit it if the area is too seedy. So I was hoping to learn more here.

Hi Starry, sorry for butting in your post but how did you find out the Hampton inn also has port shuttle service? Their web page only says airport shuttle and local shuttle.

I am also looking for a hotel in Baltimore with complimentary airport and shuttle service. I"d love it if the hotel was close to the light rail too for visiting inner harbor. Is there a sight that shows which hotels offer both airport and port shuttle service?

TIA :)

Most will NOT..

SKIP the Best Western on O'Donnell

Start here

http://www.cruise.maryland.gov/content/hotels

Some hotels with airport shuttles will drop you at the light rail...which you can get at the airport...

Go to Hampton's website, put in your dates, when the initial rate list comes up, hit VIEW PACKAGES AND PROMOS FOR THIS ROOM and it will say sleep stay and sail or something like that

No worries.... apology accepted:p

A friend of mine works in that area...I am trying to find out for you....

I don't believe in reviews much, but that's just me....

It's probably OK but there are parts of Glen Burnie that are, well...not nice...and I am not sure about that. If it's near Target, it's OK but I went at dusk last summer and didn't feel great about being there...granted, I was going to Target, but I still wanted to get out as fast as I could....

Again, not as familiar with that part of the greater airport area as I am with Arundel Mills and the area that's closest..

Really though, please stop locking in on "FREE" port shuttles...they are not "free' , the cost is built into the rate, and you go when THEY want....as opposed to when YOU want..

A cab, last time I went from an airport area hotel (The Westin I think) to the pier was around $35. Though you have to watch, the hotel referred me to the 'car service' - a person sitting in the lobby with a big SUV (he likely was legit) who said, wellllll.... It's about 70 bucks, but I can charge you 60. I said "you're CRAZY...a cab is under 40 so no thanks..."

The Country Inn used to have a package, and the Hyatt Place does but it must be booked through a consolidator - if you used a TA they probably can book it for you. Call the Hyatt Place direct and they can probably tell you....

Starry..

OK I heard back...

"It's not a bad spot. . .It is within walking distance to Starbucks, and Qdoba and across the street from Glen Burnie Mall, Target..." and some other things..

So you'd prob be OK but I wouldn't be out in the dark...the area is what I thought it was..so again, it was reasonably safe, I just didn't want to be there in the dark. Be careful walking, it's a busy road...

There is, I think, a Five Guys burgers by Target, and a few other things...Hmmmm

hth

(I'd still stay by Arundel Mills....but that's just me.....I like the Safeway, liquor store, starbucks, 9000000 food choices, and the Casino.. :p;))

We were able to have our cab take us to "The Wine Market" on Ft. Street on the way to the port - it was no more than half a mile from the port.

I read about that one on this board. We'd rather buy wine near the hotel beforehand if we can. If not, we will make a stop on fort street.

Thank you for asking your friend. I am glad to hear that the area is not too bad. If we stay there, we will exercise appropriate caution, especially after dark.

No prob... I am surprised I actually heard back..LOL...:p:D

Good luck........

(IMO it's more of a road kill thing than a bad person thing....I remember people driving like wackos...but the more I think about it, there were a lot of people out and about for dinner......)

You're not butting in; information exchange is the high point of these boards (we hope;)).

Here's a quote form the website, "Hampton Inn Baltimore/Glen Burnie is conveniently located near I-95 and 695, just eight miles from Baltimore. Enjoy our free shuttle service to BWI Airport, cruise docks and train stations during your stay at our hotel in Glen Burnie, MD. " Some tripadvisor reviewers used the cruise port shuttle; most liked it but one or two did not (small shuttle, could get desired time...if that happens to us, we will get a taxi rather than get frustrated). Here is the hotel website I quoted:

http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/maryland/hampton-inn-baltimore-glen-burnie-BALGRHX/index.html

I hope it helps.

You have a good point about shuttles running when they want, not always when the passenger wants. In other port cities some hotels have included delightful shuttle service with safe, engaging drivers. In other instances, we have paid for a taxi rather than deal with their shuttle schedule and multiple stops at various ship.

Still, anytime I can get a decent hotel room for about $100 that includes airport shuttle, breakfast, wifi, and port shuttle, it seems like a bargain to me. Since I am flying in, I do not need the parking package. Those seem like really good deals to me, too. Someday I hope to need a precruise hotel with parking; I so look forward to retiring to an area within easy driving distance of a cruise port.

Makes sense...I am just a control freak..:D

The random date I checked I didn't see anything other than a package that had it all, but then again, I wasn't really looking.....

Just don't forget to call a couple days ahead and book the shuttle

Thank you Starry :). I was looking at a list of amenities and never bothered to read the introduction to the hotel.

Thank you megr for sharing your knowledge also.

You're welcome...one of my jobs sends me to Maryland often, and I've cruised from there several times...I tend to stay by the airport as I can get great rates at some of the hotels.....

Today I called the Hampton Inn in Glen Burnie. The receptionist was pleasant and helpful. She confirmed the port shuttle is available. She said the liquor store is close by...maybe a 10 (tops 20) minute walk and it is well within the local shuttle distance. there are many other ocal shops and restaurants. I can get a free suite with my HHonors points, so we will give them a try. I appreciate all the input I received on this thread.

If anybody else is seeking a Baltimore hotel with an airport shuttle, port shuttle and a nearby liquor store, consider the Hampton Inn in Glen Burnie,
