Room Service Tipping

For room service, can I just add tips to my account or do I need to tip in cash? Also, are you given a "bill"? I want to make sure that I tip appropriately for what I order. Thanks.

Depending on what you order from room service (whether it's an additional pay item or included in the cruisefare), them presenting you with a bill is sort of hit or miss. You may or may not be presented with a bill, but if you are, you can add tips to it (it will show up on your onboard account).

Or, you can tip in cash. Many people do this. Just keep a supply of 1s & 5s handy close to the door (as in have it in your hand before you open the door), as many times the room service delivery person is in and out very quickly.

There is always a bill there you can pay by debit to your stateroom account or cash, cash goes to that person, charges are always pooled amongst all of the room service team.some items have a room charge say packaged items not made on the ship, so beer will cost, candy will cost, now if it's a very light order a minimum of $1 per order per person, if it's a few times $2/3 pp, up to say for a full breakfast $10 overall.

When we request room service we tell them, "If you want a tip, bring a slip."

Here is my take fwiw;

As PP mentioned you are not always presented with a slip/receipt. Although protocol demands one, from my understanding. So it should arrive with your food regardless if you ever see it. The receipt is the confirmation said order was delivered/inventoried and ordered. Rumor is a slip tip is split between phone operator and deliverer. Rumor is that is why deliverer rarely presents tip slip. If you tip cash, the deliverer doesn't always share the the tip with the phone operator.

So, the most conscientious/concerned pax would tip a bit on a slip, tip a bit in dollars to the deliverer, therefore all is well and tipped, in the controversially land of Tipped.

ETA; Oh my. Did I misspeak. My bad. Do I need to change my "conscientious/concerned pax" ? ? out of protocol? How about dedicated, thorough, or perhaps just compassionate.

The reasons for the " potential hiding" of the charge slip is as mentioned before, cash tips are kept to delivery person, charges are pooled within the team, no split to the person who picked the

Hone up it's shared and part of the role, re spending time in room to give a tip, depends on size of the room, very small rooms they have to be in and out no other option, for larger rooms they set up the table, can bring in a table cloth for you, more for the suits and reek a bit of time, we have cash in a drawer near the door, and not in hand and are always able to tip them.

We find that when we order room service on DCL, sometimes there is a slip to sign, sometimes not. We almost never order anything that is charged for.

We always bring a stack of $1's and tip $2-3 depending on the amount ordered.

There will be a slip but,, as servers get all cash given to them but charged items to account are pooled many do not trust the system to give them a share, do they do not offer it up preferring cash

Sorry, but there is NOT always a slip to sign. Most recently, in our experience, it varied by night and delivery person. The only time it is consistent is that if you order a charged item, there will be a bill. Otherwise, it is hit or miss EVEN on the same cruise. We've had cruises where a slip was presented every time, others when it was never presented, and still others where sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I'm with the others--if there is a slip, you can charge a tip. If not, having some small denomination bills handy will do the job. And maybe I'm just cheap, but I laugh when I read of some of the "suggestions" that people give for the amount of the tip. I consider that the server has a suggested tip of $4 per guest per day, which represents service of 3 meals. The guy who spent 10 minutes delivering something to my room (and half the time didn't get the order right!) doesn't get $10 from me.

And while the breakfast hang tag system normally works, don't necessarily blame DCL if your food fails to appear. Sometimes there are tweens who run the halls removing the tags! Yeah, where are the parents?

This is not the current room service menu (at least not on the Magic, Dream and Fantasy - I can personally attest that there is a new menu on those 3 ships).

The new menu does not have those items that I bolded.

There are however the following (things I remember):

Tomato soup

Salad Niciose (with canned tuna - not ahi tuna)

4 cheese pizza

tomato and mozerella panini (like a grilled cheese with tomato)

salmon served with orzo and asparagus

chicken wings (they call them buffalo wings but they are really just wings with bbq sauce - not spicy)

I also bolded the "cake at sea" because although still available, it's not really "cake" - they are a variety of mousse-type desserts (like the jello cheesecake) and are nothing like the previous cake of the day selections.

I prefer to charge tips to my account so I request the slip to sign. I think I have been presented the slip two or three times without asking and I have never been denied when I ask for it. For me it is simple, if you want a tip please let me sign the slip. We order room service several times a day and I don't want to bring a bunch of small bills.

Are there automatic tips added to your account each night for service from all the staff? These to be divided among everyone. Or are you supposed to tip everyone with little envelopes sometime during the cruise.

DCL suggests gratuities of $12.00 per guest (that's each person in your room) per day. The $12.00 is broken out - $4.00 per guest per day to your Room Host; $4.00 per guest per day to your Server; $3.00 per guest per day to your Asst Server; and $1.00 per guest per day to your Head Server.

Your gratuities are automatically added to your onboard account. At the end of your cruise you receive tip coupons and envelopes. The coupons have the position title, name, and amount of tip. You place the coupon in the co-responding envelope (also printed with position title) and hand them out the last day. You may put additional cash in the envelopes, if you wish. Or not.

Room Service tipping is generally done with the food is delivered. And beverage orders have an automatic 15% tip added. Spa services have an automatic 18% tip added.

As above, the $12 per guest per night of cruise covers the 4 main tipped positions. (server, assistant server, head server, room host).

In addition, any time you make a bar purchase (alcoholic or not), there is an automatic 15% tip applied. This 15% is divided among all bar workers. There is a line on the ticket for additional tip. If you add additional, it goes to the person who served you.

Room service tips are generally given at the time the food is delivered.

I Just bring a stack of $2:00 Bills to us for room service and porters

I wouldn't bring $2 bills. A lot of them don't know what they are, and I've heard that many merchants even in the US don't want to take them. Just bring ones and fives.
