what is the earliest I can board?

It really depends on the ship and the port. I've been in PC where without being Platinum or FTTF, I was onboard at 11am. Last year in FLL, I was FTTF and didn't board until 1215. But the earlier you get there, the earlier you will board. Most probably by 1215 at the Florida ports.

I've also heard where people show up at 2 or so and walk right on after checking in

You most likely will not have access to your cabin until 1:30.

Not supposed to. Some folks just sneak in anyway.

Why do I mention this?

If you have a lot of carry on stuff, you'll have to carry it with you while you explore the ship or relax by the pool, or grab a bite to eat. So depending on how much stuff you carry on, you can make a better decision as to what time you want to board the ship.

Well, show up around 10:30 is a good time, you will get a card with a zone number to board. depending what number you get it could one of ones that board right after Diamond, Platinum, Suite, wedding and FTTF.

When i usually show up around that time i got a early zone number which was 2-5. It was right after those levels of passenger groups.

But getting on the ship depends if ship has emptied of the previous cruise. Usually happens after 11--1130.
