A your government issued birth certificate and government issued photo ID are sufficient if you are a US citizen. If something happens and you need to leave the ship early then you would need the assistance of the Consulate in order to fly back.

A certified copy of the birth certificate is require I believe.

 

The only requirement is that it be issued by a government entity, such as county, city, state. DHS allows either the original or a copy to be used (but of course the original is best).

 

"Closed Loop" Cruises: U.S. citizens who board a cruise ship at a port within the United States, travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship may present a government issued photo identification, along with proof of citizenship (an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization).

You may not need one... but anytime you're leaving U.S. soil, it's always a good idea to have one. They're valid for 10 years.

Correct. You do not NEED a passport. Should you have one? Absolutely! !!

No passport necessary. Whether or not you get one after weighing the cost/benefit scenario and the practicality of it, is ENTIRELY up to YOU!
