No more balcony smoking on Carnival

Recommended Posts

This morning DH stated that after our Sept cruise on CCL, that is it. NCL will get all our business now, until they go smoke free on the balconies

and then who knows

We are looking for something later on in the year. One of the guys I work with loves NCL and highly recommends it. We keep saying we should give it a try. I think this is the push to give it a try, along with Freestyle dining and the Haven suites, he speaks so highly about

Same with me...but while I have no strict allegiance to a particular cruise line, having cruised 33 times on a mix of Celebrity, HAL, NCL & CCL....I won't be booking any further cruises with Carnival . I book balconies and suites, I spend a bundle on each cruise, and I cruise 4 or more times yearly lately...

I will just squeek by on the October 5th cruise...as their new policy doesn't kick in until sail dates 10/9 or after...but I'm conflicted about what to do about the 14-day repo next March. That cruise is already paid for, so that's a good thing, and the itinerary is fabulous, which is an additional good thing....

BUT (there's always a "but" lol ;))...I want to make a statement, I want CCL to suffer financially, and at some point I want them to miss me :o, lol. I'm platinum with CCL, & have enjoyed them very much...but this is painful for me.

I smoke...it's probably the worst thing I do...as I'm not a drunk, or a drug user, or any other bad thing...but I really like smoking & don't plan on stopping. So it is what it is :)...all future bookings will be with NCL or HAL, and I'm hoping it'll be a couple of years before NCL amends it's smoking policy.

Likely CCL & NCL might be just switching passengers! :D

I am a non smoker so obviously CCL policy will not stop me from going on their ships.I am booked on NCL this December on a balcony, and while some people are very approachable,we experienced a few years ago,the complete reverse. We politely approached the folks next door about our smoking allergies and they got very angry at us for even asking.

I think of the major lines NCL and Holland America will be the only ones allowing smoking on the balcony,so yes there are many choices out there for everyone.

I think that the point is, these non-smokers DID pick the line they preferred, and neither they, nor their preferred line have changed ANYTHING, but as a result of some 3rd party (Carnival) action - their preferred line risks becoming less attractive.

I don't begrudge people trying to accommodate themselves. The poster to whom I believe you were responding (2 or 3 posts above yours) didn't ask the new former-CCL cruisers to choose their cabins in clusters...merely asked for some mechanism to enable themselves to off-set any additional negative influence on their cruise - enabling themselves to restore their preferred line to the way it was (hit or miss with neighbour smokers) - before Carnival changed the rules.

Enjoy it while you can. NCL will follow the rest of the cruise industry and ban balcony smoking sooner or later. Most likely sooner.

I agree with you. They'd be foolish not to.

I understand your feelings, however I don't think CCL blindly made this decision. I am not sure but if insurance costs less for cruise lines with tighter smoking policies, then they will not suffer financially if those relatively small number of die hard smokers leave to go to NCL.

And let's be realistic, it may not be tomorrow....but NCL is going to go this route eventually as well.

well since Royal Carribean posted 2/3 profit loss in 1st quarter (they banned smoking on balconies as of Jan 1, 2014 i.e. 1st quarter) and they are having problems fully booking Carribean ships I would think that the prudent course of action for NCL to take would be to determine if this balcony smoking ban has a detrimental affect on Carnivals occupancy rate and/or profit margin.

One thing they have statistical evidence for is that smokers spend more money on board then non-smokers....Royal lost serious profit due to less onboard spending and I know a lot of smokers will no longer sail on Royal due to their policy.

So everyone who says that non-smoking is the way to go for financial reasons might wanna wait and see.

Also it was stated by Kevin Sheehan in Jan 2014 that NCL has NO INTENTION OF CHANGING ITS CURRENT SMOKING POLICY....So those that say its coming obviously didn't pay attention.

The reason they posted 2/3 less profit had zip, zero, zilch to do with the smoking policy. If it had, there is NO way in hell CCL would have gone this route.

CCL made the decision after seeing how Princess, then RCI fared with the change and obviously the smoking policy changes didn't cause enough of a dent in profit to dissuade them from following suit.

Yep...and CCL head honchos said the same thing not too long ago. As a matter of fact, the only thing I am surprised about is that CCL beat NCL to it (surprised and disappointed) In fact, your post sounds just as adamantly 'sure' about NCL not making changes as many of the CCL fans as well as CCL cruise director John Heald posts did when Royal Caribbean made the changes.

And where do you think all those lost RCI dollars went to pray tell? NCL of course :D

LOL, that's just because it seems that Royal cruisers have this 'thing' against Carnival for some reason ;) :p

Has anyone thought of a compromise-make 25 pct of the balconies smoking allowed and have them in just one section of the ship,so anyone (such as myself)who is a non smoker can look at the deck plans and arrange accordingly?

or have we gotten like washington dc where compromise is a dirty word?

Wow - nice way to welcome new cruisers from Carnival!

It really blows my mind that people who find smoke so offensive and people who have "smoke allergies" continue to gripe about people smoking on the balcony. Those smokers are within their right and smoking where they are allowed to per a policy. They made a decision to go with a particular cruise line because of their smoking policy. If you find smoke so offensive or are so allergic - why didn't YOU select another cruise line where you wouldn't have those problems since there are many to choose from instead of complaining about what others (who are perfectly within their rights) are doing.

Here here!! BRAVO! She sounds kind of old anyway..let them go to Holland America..oh no they have smoking..how about Celebrity then..LOL

To each their own. ....

We are not bothered by smoke/smokers, but we did find the casino on the BA extremely smokey (not the Gem/Jewel)

Hate to see how bad it would be if there was NO balcony smoking allowed and EVERY smoker winds up in the casino to light up.....

Why can't one side of the ship with only SOME floors designated as "smoking balconies" be implemented? ?? Everybody wins. .....

Safe sailing

Could everyone coming over from Carnival, due to the new Smoking Policy, please state the particulars of their new NCL cruise, Ship & Date, would be great? I'd like to be able to avoid them if there's multiple cabins on the same sailing. Of course, your cabin number would be great too, that way I could move if I'd be in the line of fire (smoke).

Thanks.

I posted this on another thread but figure it will be moved or deleted so if everyone could be kind enough to do this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Are you serious?

Ummm yes smoking is an addiction. I do smoke and I would cancel my reservation if it was a cruise out of NY not one that I would lose any money over. I would make do if it was after final payment and just use the smoking areas that are permitted but would not book any future cruises.

Actually the next thing up will be the addition angle. Get who knows maybe smokers can become a protected group? Lol

Jk

We were already looking at NCL for a Panama Canal cruise (date still TBD), but yes...... the changes in Carnival's policy has us moving a little quicker to NCL for our regular cruising too.

For those of you worried about staying upwind, I only smoke 3 cigarettes a day on the balcony. Two in the morning with my coffee, and one at bedtime. All of them in my pajamas. I'm pretty sure the sight of me in pj's is more offensive than my cigarettes. ;)

I don't think anyone here would ever have a problem with that. It's the chain smokers that are the issue!

I totally agree with this but I think it would be difficult logistically trying to alternate floors. The only way it could be done easily is to designate either port or starboard balconies as smoking or non. If you tried to alternate floors there will still be many non-smokers complaining that the smoke is wafting into their balconies above or below.

I also agree with what will happen with the smoke in the casinos if balcony smoking is banned. All non-smokers should be careful for what they wish for.

I am a non smoker and truthfully I cannot stand it. But I respect the rights of anyone, smokers included, who are following the rules. And NCL's rules allow smoking on balconies at this present time. I would never harrass anyone smoking on the balcony next to me. It would be my responsibilty to approach the smoker with finesse if I needed to.

My sister in law, who I adore is a smoker. I have hardly ever seen her smoke in the 17 years I have known her. She is so discreet and considerate of others. I also miss my favorite Aunt (and Godmother) who was a chain smoker. Smokers are not nameless and faceless monsters. They are our families and loved ones.

I have battled my weight for years. I can only imagine how hard it must be for some smokers to quit or cut down. I watched my mom quit cold turkey over 30 years ago and I watched my dad struggle for years trying to quit. Let us not lump all smokers together. Nor all non smokers. We differ.

But, for the present it appears NCL is going to attract a lot more smokers.
