No more balcony smoking on Carnival

Recommended Posts

I just got off my 2nd NCL cruise last month (which, btw, was great!). DH and I are in the planning stages of a cruise with his parents for this fall. None of us smoke, and we will book balcony rooms for this cruise. We were strongly considering Norwegian, but with CCL changing their smoking policies and all of the smokers jumping ship to Norwegian, we are reconsidering that possibility.

NCL may get all of the smokers from the other cruise lines, but may not get new business from non-smokers (if the traveler is educated on the policies). I've been on 19 cruises on 3 different lines, and had just decided to start exploring some different Norwegian ships and itineraries, but that may not happen now.

I do believe that NCL will eventually move to more non-smoking areas - my explorations may have to wait until then. I wouldn't rule out NCL completely at this time, but this does become one of several factors in my planning process.

This is how I feel. NCL is my line of choice and I've not had any issues with smoking/smokers in the past. However, I fear that I'm on borrowed time if the percentages of smokers to non-smokers shifts substantially due to the new policy. Thankfully I"m not planning a trip right now and I can see how this plays out a bit.

I am not going to bother reading 20 pages of back and forth but just to balance this whole balcony thing keep in mind that Carnival allows smoking in their Dance Clubs while Norwegian does not.

I might have to save money in the future by booking Oceanviews or Insides if too many smokers choose to smoke on their balconies but since I LOVE to dance I will stick with the Nonsmoking Dance Parties! I can choose to have a nonsmoking experience in a different cabin but there is no choice whatsoever if smoking is allowed in the Clubs on Carnival.

Everyone who wants to jump ship to Carnival because now the balconies are nonsmoking might want to consider what activities they enjoy...and what they will encounter.

I don't care one way or another about smoke or smokers. I just find it interesting that people would plan an entire vacation around how many steps they have to take to have a cigarette. As someone who smoked for 25 years (quit for 2 now), that seems bizarre to me.

Nicotine is an addictive drug. Like any drug addict they need their fix. Since pushing it was big business with huge marketing campaigns I only partially blame individuals for getting hooked. For that reason I would oppose a total ban at this time. Some outside areas should be maintained. It should be banned in any inside public space and on balconies. On balconies not only because of the smell but because it is a fire hazard. I am sure the smokers will manage the steps. I have seen that they do manage on Celebrity to take the steps, has no inside smoking, not even the casino. NCL will ban balcony smoking. And eventually go farther than that. It's only a matter of time.
