No more balcony smoking on Carnival

Recommended Posts

I am a non smoker and truthfully I cannot stand it. But I respect the rights of anyone, smokers included, who are following the rules. And NCL's rules allow smoking on balconies at this present time. I would never harrass anyone smoking on the balcony next to me. It would be my responsibilty to approach the smoker with finesse if I needed to.

My sister in law, who I adore is a smoker. I have hardly ever seen her smoke in the 17 years I have known her. She is so discreet and considerate of others. I also miss my favorite Aunt (and Godmother) who was a chain smoker. Smokers are not nameless and faceless monsters. They are our families and loved ones.

I have battled my weight for years. I can only imagine how hard it must be for some smokers to quit or cut down. I watched my mom quit cold turkey over 30 years ago and I watched my dad struggle for years trying to quit. Let us not lump all smokers together. Nor all non smokers. We differ.

But, for the present it appears NCL is going to attract a lot more smokers.

I would never harass anyone on the balcony next to me either. I think it's easier to come here and just let loose LOL Seriously, the only time we really had an issue was, ironically, on Carnival. It was so bad that we just couldn't sit outside ... and that ticked me off, but I never said a word about it. Most people are respectful when they smoke. I always used to ask people that were with me if they minded if I smoked back when I used to smoke. Anyone that has ever asked me - I always say "no, of course not. Thank you for asking" just because I would never tell someone who was that darn polite to me "no - don't smoke" ... I think probably the majority of folks are the same way. Most, IMO, would not say or act to someone in person the way they do here. Just my 2 cents. Edited - also, it's been 10 years for me, and I still get the urge at times.

Wow - nice way to welcome new cruisers from Carnival!

It really blows my mind that people who find smoke so offensive and people who have "smoke allergies" continue to gripe about people smoking on the balcony. Those smokers are within their right and smoking where they are allowed to per a policy. They made a decision to go with a particular cruise line because of their smoking policy. If you find smoke so offensive or are so allergic - why didn't YOU select another cruise line where you wouldn't have those problems since there are many to choose from instead of complaining about what others (who are perfectly within their rights) are doing.

Funny thing is any doctor will tell you that there is no such thing as being allergic to smoke - ROFLMAO

And where do you think all those lost RCI dollars went to pray tell? NCL of course :D

Actually Princess dollars went to RCI, RCI dollars went to CCL and NCL. Now CCL dollars will go to NCL...End result if NCL doesn't change policy they will end up the big money winners :):):)

Now if HAL changes it's smoking policy NCL will really clean up.

Now I'm ready to duck and cover:)

I'm not sure I believe this. Although I used to smoke, I get an immediate headache if I am in a smokey area. Obivously not from someone smoking one cigarette - I'm talking like a bar (back when it was allowed), or someplace like that.

I don't see how you infer this? NCL's current cruisers (the ones who have made them profitable and growing) would leave for less smoky pastures.

Not sure how that makes them money winners.

I worked for an ENT and I assure you, they will tell you no such thing. Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages causing the symptoms most associate with a cold. There is both "allergic" and "non allergic" rhinitis. The allergic type is caused by pollens, mold, etc while the "non allergic" can be triggered by other irritants such as cigarette smoke, perfumes, etc. I know I get that response in a very smokey room, as well as a raspy throat.

And I know it may be hard to believe, but smoking is also associated with chronic otitis media ( inflammation, fluid accumulation and infection of the middle ear ) in infants and young children. The first thing our doctors always told the families of those with chronic middle ear fluid and infections was not to smoke, or not to smoke in the house or car around these kids.

As long as there are smokers and non smokers in the world we will have to coexist. If you want me to respect your right to smoke within the boundaries set out by cities or cruise ships, then smokers must also respect the rights of non smokers and realize that it is just not a philosophical disagreement that smokers and non smokers have. Some non smokers have health issues which can be exacerbated by contact with smoke. I would hope we could all be respectful of each other.

Yeah...funny thing is....I developed asthma as an adult do to my allergy to cigarette smoke...of which I was tested for by an allergist! So go ahead and roll on the floor laughing your butt off...but be sure to check the literature (and I'm not talking about Wikipedia) before you post such nonsense.

I just came off a 12 night Spirit Med cruise. I had looked forward to my balcony cabin! Instead I spent 12 miserable days with two elderly chain smoking hacking couple smoking ALL day! This would give me reason to switch to carnival.

My suggestion would be to limit it to balconies on one side of the ship for NCL.

What's a cowbell and earplugs gonna do to deter smoke?

The only thing I can come up with is that if he appears on the balcony that way...the people on either side will be laughing so hard they won't he able to light up! :D

I'm a smoker and would love to quit but haven't done it yet. The thing that bothers me the most is the time line. We have Getaway booked for 10/18, what if NCL suddenly said "no smoking on balconies after 10/09" ?? The people who fly already have their airfare and hotels booked so they are screwed. I'm not going to debate if it is good, bad or ugly but I think they could have been more respectful of their CURRENT customers and given at least a 6 month warning that it was going to happen. I think those that are royally pissed have a point, don't make a change like this when the customer already has all their plans in place. This change couldn't have waited until 1/01/15??

I'm sorry ... that constant hacking has got to be the most annoying sound there is :( not to mention just downright gross.

Welcome to NCL with your smoking habit, perhaps I can help you by assuring you that you can beat the habit as many others have done in the past. I hope you enjoy your cruise, but, please do the other non-smokers the courtesy of smoking in specially designated areas only. For now, it includes your balcony and all I would ask is a little consideration, please be kind enough to give those around you some breathing room.

I understand you may think smoking is great and that you really enjoy the taste and smell of your cigarettes. Let me assure that the smell is quite distasteful to most non-smokers and most

nonsmokers are too polite to

say it. You probably don't even notice the stink because of the many chemicals the tobacco companies add to cigarettes in order to increase your addiction.

Anyway, not to offend anyone, especially the persons that felt my previous post was offensive/rude, which sucks nothing but clean air (at least for me), all I really want to say is that it will not be long before all of the cruise lines

will be smoke free and you'll be forced to take land-based vacations or finally come to the realization that there is a reason why smoking is banned in so many places.

I'm done here and don't give an RA what you think or do, it will make no difference to me. If you continue to smoke though, it could make a huge difference to you and, more importantly, those who love you, but, that's your choice. Enjoy your cruises on NCL, it's the best cruise line around, although, if you're a non-smoker, maybe not so much. Cruise on.

Cheers.

Cigarette smoke is not an allergen , I dont care how you spin it. Even the link you posted does not claim it to be an allergen.. Just sayin . lets be clear ;)

Cigarette smoke allergy: Cigarette smoke allergy refers to an adverse reaction by the body to cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke allergy is not considered a true allergy but a sensitivity as the smoke is an irritant rather than an allergen. People with other allergies tend to be more sensitive to cigarette smoke. Show any published paper to the contrary and I'll eat my hat . ;)

That was my point many posts ago..I booked on July 2 and booked my airfare July 3rd. Nothing was said to me even though I specifically asked and booked a suite ( I know no perks at all just wanted the space and it was really cheap) 4 days later bingo no smoking in balconies as of October. Cancelled my cruise and I am back in the Haven where I belong, but ...like everything. Carnival does it was a poor decision and they should have done it at least 6 months out. I am in the minority but I believe they have shot themselves in the foot here.

OT - but you booked the Getaway!! I thought you liked the smaller ships? You will have a great time though.

Just some random thoughts. Wouldn't it be better to have smokers on their outside balcony smoking where the wind moves it along quickly? The alternative is inside in the casino (I smoke and I won't even smoke in there it's so heavy) or in clustered areas on the pool deck where there are crowds of non smokers? A large group smoking in designated outside areas, in my opinion are much more annoying due to heavy smoke output from many smokers clustered together.

Privately out on their own balcony it's a single cigarette smoked quickly and gone with the wind. Be careful what you wish for, clustered smokers in designated outside areas will be much worse for those with smoke sensitiveness. Just sayin.

Just cancelled our Carnival cruise on Nov. 1 to NCL's Dec. 1 in the Caribbean, due to the smoking change. We haven't been on an NCL cruise since 2004. but they've got our money now, along with HAL, where we have an upcoming Med cruise to enjoy our aft balcony!!!
