Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

I'm not sure whether these big companies realise how useful things like these forums are to them.

NCL will have wasted a lot of time making this decision (whatever it turns out to be). Top level management will have been involved in discussions. They will have experts who know the regulations in great detail. They have probably had the designers of the ship involved. They know a lot about the airflows in the internal areas. They will have demographic experts advising them on smoking rates, and what the effects of the change will have on future incomes, both in terms of bookings and onboard spend.

They will be using past comments from customers, and post cruise surveys. They have very likely done some research into peoples opinions.

All wasted I'm afraid.

All that time and money, they've made their decision and apparently will announce it today, but they needn't have done it, because there are some people on message boards, who have spent a couple of weeks onboard cruise ships who could just have told them what to do. :)

That gives me a thought. If smoking is severely limited with this announce then it stands to reason that some or even many smokers will rethink cruising in the future.

Thus, less smokers onboard

Therefore, less smoke in general

So, less people coughing either because of the smoke or because they themselves are smokers and have a smokers cough.

Result is that there will be less airborne particles in the air from the effect of pax and crew coughing assuming those coughs are directly related to the numbers if cigarettes smoked onboard

Unexpected benefit is the real possibility of less cruise bred illness onboard

My bill is in the mail and my consulting fee is $300 per hour. Thank you very much. Lol

Really... You mean the other threads about it were right?

What about smoking on the ship?

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Good news for some and bad for some… I am a nonsmoker and I have honestly, never smelt smoke from another balcony… Maybe I just don't pay attention!! The casino is another story and Im happy that there limiting smoking to the people using the casino. That should cut down on some of the smoke in and around that area of the ships...

Looks like they've left open areas on deck alone if I read that correctly. So smokers can smoke in designated areas. Thank God for that. I was concerned yesterday when it looked like they were limiting it to only the casino. The policy should be fair to all sides and if I read that correctly it appears it might be.

Thanks for that. Ncl back on our agenda as a result of this announcement. Until last year we sailed ncl and were happy with the experience...other than the smoking policy re balconies. We moved to 'X' as a consequence. I thought it only a matter of time before NCL etc followed such as 'X' and so it has proved. Most welcome!

Treating e-cigs the same as cigarettes is just stupid, especially considering the explanation for it - that a bunch of people who refuse to mind their own business will perceive that the policy is not enforced.

Total Agree!

As a smoker I would be tickled pink if they banned all smoking indoors on the ship. Just let me have my balcony.

I'm very excited. So that means no smoking in the nightclubs and bars. My only disappointment is that it won't be in affect for my Oct. 19 cruise. I'm almost tempted to price a date after Nov. 1. And I also prefer Pepsi! :D
