Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Compromise in the casino? The casino always was a smoking area

The only change now will be you must be an active Player to smoke there.

And it will be enforced so actually there will be less space indoor for a smoker.

Not a compromise by any means just a cut back on indoor smoking area because it will be more than obvious if you are in the casino just to smoke and not play

Ncl wants you to play ... Not just sit there and pretend to play so you can smoke

I have always said just put up a wall and be done with it but since that doesn't seem to be a thought with new ship builders I think smokers should brace themselves for non smoking casinos just like celebrity.

5 years max.

To be active, you simply need to drop a minimum bet ever so often. Neither a cruiser nor NCL can make you play any faster than you want. Shoot, I'm sure I could finish a whole cigarette just reading the rules of the machine and making a single pull if I wanted. While I am all for the rules, I also know how to make the rules (or lack of them) work for me and there is no rule stating how quickly one must play.

I think it is rude when the architects place the casino so every has to walk by or thru it. Elderly and babies alike.

And yes I will put my hand over my face and get thru ASAP

Call me rude but I think it is the greedy company who is rude by placing the casino where they do

The BA being the perfect example. Open and centrally located

There are many other decks that can be walked to get one from the aft of the ship to the bow without walking through the casino so no one "has" to walk through the casino if they do not choose to.

i'm a non-smoker. I can't see any smokers on their balconies ever bothering me. I've been on a few cruises and never been bothered by anyone smoking. Not on balconies or anywhere else.

I think there are a lot of folks that just look for things to whine about because they can!

So, did we decide it's a good policy or a bad policy?

Just kidding. The enforceable part will be enforced, but the ban on vaping in staterooms and on balconies will be ignored just as the speed limit is ignored on a lonely stretch of highway. NCL's official reason for the ban is that other people will think you have a cigarette. Which I find hilarious because the two people who vape in my office next to me all day - in California, no less - have devices that resemble cell phones with mouthpieces. I had to ask what the heck they were (I was thinking breathalyzers or an app that detected if you had halitosis).

Whether it is a good or bad policy is determined from each person's point of view. As for NCL it will be a good policy if revenue goes up and a bad policy if revenue goes down. I could also see down the road if revenue takes a far enough swing southward NCL revisiting the policy and making modifications to it because the biggest concern of any properly run business in a free market society is profit.

I was waiting for someone to say this. Not all ships place the casino in the same place

Have you been on the BA ?

With no concern about smoke smell they poorly designed the casinos location

Fortunately smoking will now be limited and enforced to seated players only

Still one seat. One bet. One smoker

Sit there for 8 hours if you want just don't expect to have your cruising party standing next to you so they can smoke

And even consider going to the casino just to smoke anymore

Point is that the non smokers are serious about a smoke free environment

Non smokers by nature do not pollute the air others breath

Smokers by the mere fact that they smoke in an area where humans are present will and do pollute the air with a proven carninogen that humans that are next to you must breath in We do not have a choice

We can walk away

We can decide to not spend money gambling

We can get an ov or an Inside

But the fact remains that smokers are polluting the air. Yes cars and ships do as well but we MUST have those things in daily life for cargo transport etc

We do not need to have smoking in a casino or a balcony

We can survive with a non smoking casino

And be safer without butts flying off a balcony

It is not a war

All that is needed is a glass enclosed space aft for the smokers

Casino restaurant bar etc. just keep it away from everyone else

I am all for a zero dress code as well as I don't care if you walk the ship in your underware in order to go there for your 8 am coffee

Just keep the smoke away from and smoke all day if you want but you can no longer pollute the air others breath

We did the same on princess. Sat there all the time and just smoked while reading the rules. You would be surprised how long it takes. When a hand waver fake cougher started her performance, we started blowing out huge plumes of smoke. So much so, we couldn't take it anymore, then we just got a up and left. What fun!

I guess I now understand why most non-smokers feel it is us against them. Pretty sad, isn't it.

Well, I never told anyone it bothered me. It's just not in my nature to do that, especially when they were so kind to ask in the first place. I would just find another machine to play at if it really bothered me.

Actually If I asked and you said it bothered you I would refrain from smoking or I would go to another machine. Some of us were raised very well to be polite even if we have a nasty habit addiction ;) LOL

I was thinking the same thing when I read this. I though the rants were over. Why she is starting again is beyond me. Let's move on already the ban is in place to take effect 11/1/2014. Why complain on other things really???????

See, there you go. You say it's not a war and yet you seem to think you can dictate the terms of gambling. My cruising party is DW and myself, that's it. If you think you can dictate whether or not I can stand by my DW as she gambles or vice versa, you've got another thing coming. BTW, I can make two bets last an hour if I so choose because I can take all the time I want to read the rules of the machine, determine the different possible types of bets, so on and so on. Not a single thing anyone can do about that and no violation of any NCL rule.

If non-smokers are serious about a smoke free environment, free free to stay away from smoke. But don't think for one second you can walk into a smoking environment (which the casino still is) and dictate your terms because I really couldn't care less what YOUR rules are, only NCL's.

Not my job to keep the smoke away from you, your job to stay away from the smoke. And since the ship is owned by NCL and not you, it's up to them to determine if smoke belongs in the casino and for the time being, IT IS. :)

BTW, interesting that YOU seem to get to decide what is or isn't a rule in NCL's casino? Care to show where NCL says a gambler has to be seated since you are running around claiming that to be so. Have they now started to provide seating for the roulette wheel and craps tables?

Agreed. I take ownership of everything I said early in this thread, but what's done is done. Time to move on and come to a happy medium.

Nope, never on the BA. Been on the Epic. At least 5 other decks can take you from the bow to the stern without traversing the casino. I'll guarantee it's the same on the BA. But, if you hate NCL's ship designs so much, why do you sail them???

Glad you waited so long for someone to state a fact for you. If you've been on the BA, you could have stated it yourself though. Waiting for someone else to do it for you only took 54 pages.

Edit to Add: There are 14 public decks on the BA. Of those, 12 decks pretty much go bow to stern (or fairly close). Deck 7 has the casino so that leave 11 decks which to traverse the ship (minus the deck that has the outdoor smoking area) so you have 10 decks left that have no smoking on them. Of course, I realize now that 90% of the decks being smoke free isn't enough for you. Maybe you'd have better luck on a different ship or a different line.

I agree as well. NCL has changed their rules, we can now abide by them or move on to something else. NCL will change those rules again if they feel they are making more profit or taking more losses. Either way, out of our hands.

It seems like some of the smokers are trying to one up the non-smokers with their nastiness and their I'll show you attitude and some of the non-smokers are trying to one up the smokers with their nastiness and their I'll show you attitude and if they continue, there will never be a solutiion to the issue. All it is doing is drawing a longer and bigger line in the sand and making folks take sides.

BTW, thanks for being one of those considerate smokers who would ask if it bothered someone, before you lite up, even though it is not required in a smoking area, it is really appreciated. The only smoker I encountered on my last cruise in the casino, asked that same question and I said, no, but would you please keep the ashtray on the other side. We ended up gambling for a couple of hours together having a great time. Just proves that smokers and non-smokers can get along, as long as there is respect on both sides.

I'm not alone trust me

It's funny how it is now zealous to want the rules enforced. Lol

Is it also zealous to not give a 16 year old a beer?

Or tell the crew about a dangerous situation on deck where someone might slip?

It's so sad that you think expecting rules to be followed and enforced is now the domain of the zealous.

Yes it is. Most people are too busy enjoying themselves and having a great time on a cruise to worry about some dad giving his 16 year old son a beer or someone sitting in the casino for 5 minutes smoking a cigarette.

Tough to enjoy oneself if smokers are breaking the rules that cause others to be uncomfortable or in danger ( as in flicking butts on another balcony)

Key word is " breaking the rules". Smoke all you want but don't do it where you are not supposed to

I follow rules so why shouldnt the smokers do the same in the casino?

The real issue is all the smokers threatening to break the rules. It's not the people that are considerate it is the inconsiderate ones causing the problems

I have made some good suggestions as to how to accommodate the smokers.

Of course the casino is someplace you are supposed to. If you are unhappy or uncomfortable with that might I suggest finding an alternative activity for yourself
