insanemagnet Posted August 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2014 Hi, I will be spending the night in a hotel on Bath Road one day prior to my cruise. Is there a grocery store nearby?? Yes - Tesco https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?&hl=en&ll=51.48026,-0.413361&spn=0.044848,0.070295&sll=51.48149,-0.446663&sspn=0.044847,0.102997&oq=super&gl=uk&hq=supermarket&t=m&z=14&layer=c&cbll=51.48011,-0.412935&panoid=0BBF7qka17cAm9B9SlO4pA&cbp=12,250.27,,1,-0.31 I am looking for some fabulous cheese to bring home. Anywhere nearby to pick up some goodies?? But Tesco is not 'that type' of grocery shop, and you will not find anything of the sort you are looking for in the immediate area of Bath Road. orchestrapal Posted August 9, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 9, 2014 If your from the US those adorable Beagles at arrival will make sure your cheese is confiscated. US agricultural Department does not allow the import of cheese.

If it's sealed in wax or cryovac in plastic, I've never had a problem. But, I thank you for your concern. :)
Scriv Posted August 10, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 10, 2014 (edited) I think, but am not totally sure, that there is quite a largish supermarket relatively nearby - but still a car's drive away - which should have a decent range of cheese. I think it's the Tesco Extra at Bull's Bridge, Southall/Hayes. Google it and see the directions. Edited August 10, 2014 by Scriv

Chairsin Posted August 10, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2014 Do you declare it? Last year I had some sealed iberico ham confiscated---they told me sealed or not no joy. If we had not been so tired we would have stood right there and devoured it. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Twickenham Posted August 10, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 10, 2014 According to this link, cheese is permissible, meat is not.

Globaliser Posted August 10, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 10, 2014 I think, but am not totally sure, that there is quite a largish supermarket relatively nearby - but still a car's drive away - which should have a decent range of cheese. I think it's the Tesco Extra at Bull's Bridge, Southall/Hayes. I would still be doubtful that it would have any "fabulous" cheese. I spent over a decade shopping at the big Tesco at Surrey Quays, and never saw anything there that would fit that description. If only there had then been the Waitroses that now exist nearby. Scriv Posted August 11, 2014 #12 Share Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Agreed, Globaliser.... Note I did say 'decent' cheese lol. Perhaps I should have just said 'cheese'. Limited even more so of course if it has to be vacuum packed! Edited August 11, 2014 by Scriv
JPRLHR Posted August 13, 2014 #13 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Waitrose will indeed have the best selection of cheeses and there's one in Staines which is five miles away but you can get there via bus from the Compass Centre on Bath Road. Bus number 441 in each direction which runs every half hour. The best Tesco around is the Extra in Slough (much better than the Southall/Hayes store) which has been newly refurbished with new deli sections etc. That would be the easiest to get to on bus number 81 in each direction from many different points along the Bath Road and runs every ten minutes. However, you would probably find the most appealing choice in one of the specialist shops in the airside duty free area at LHR. Yes it would cost considerably more but much less effort involved. Amerryscot Posted August 14, 2014 #14 Share Posted August 14, 2014 Hi, I will be spending the night in a hotel on Bath Road one day prior to my cruise. Is there a grocery store nearby?? I am looking for some fabulous cheese to bring home. Anywhere nearby to pick up some goodies?? Thanks :) Are you locked into this hotel booking? It's not a great shopping area. What else are you planning to do that day? If you are going into Central London, there are plenty of cheese shopping opportunities there. If you are hanging around the area, the Waitrose in Staines or Windsor will give you the nicest selection of cheeses. Marks and Spencer is a good place too. You should be able to buy a "cheese board" with a selection of five or six British cheeses, and similar selection of continental cheeses.
