OlsSalt Posted August 18, 2015 #2251 Share Posted August 18, 2015 I am a considerate smoker. I would never think of smoking around non-smokers or anywhere that smoking is not allowed. On a cruise ship veranda where smoking is allowed I'm going to enjoy my rights. Here is a thought. Perhaps HAL should designate one side of the ship for non-smokers. Won't work but just a thought. They could make some of the aft cabins "smoking on balcony" cabins so the wind would carry the smoke away from the non-smoking balconies and the smokers could enjoy it amongst themselves.. dmg1956 Posted August 18, 2015 #2253 Share Posted August 18, 2015 Get over it. I am considerate. I'm also tired of those who are not considerate of my rights as a smoker to spread complaints all the time. Like I said before, book with another cruise line. jtl513 Posted August 18, 2015 #2254 Share Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) ...get you're facts straight. No smoking inside except the casino. Cig smoking only on verandas. Not pipes or cigars.Speaking of getting your facts straight: from Know Before You Go, page 17:Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. . solocanadian Posted August 18, 2015 #2256 Share Posted August 18, 2015 They don't, only in obscure designated places, certainly not on the balconies (my husband loves cigars and has always observed the rules, as do the other poor misguided nicotine addicts) usually it is a windy part of a corner of the pool deck.If it happened and you smell it from your balcony, call security and report it. S Huh? Holland America does allow smoking on your own balcony.

Browser495 Posted August 18, 2015 #2258 Share Posted August 18, 2015 And should there be non-smokers on the balconies around you? I wish every smoker was so considerate. That would go a long way to a more cooperative position. As noted, on my last cruise in July, a person in the cabin below us regularly smoked cigars on his balcony. We had to go inside when that happened. I didn't report it....didn't even know I could have until reading these posts.

OCruisers Posted August 18, 2015 #2261 Share Posted August 18, 2015 Why does HAL allow smoking everywhere? Especially in the balconies? I am planning to go to HAL because I tried Celebrity already but the smoking policies are a nonstarter, I can only depart from Vancouver with a round trip because Vancouver has direct flights to Manila, and I do not want to have to get a connecting flight. HAL does NOT allow smoking everywhere on their ships. Actually, there are very limited smoking areas ... your cabin/balcony just happens to be one of them. ;) LuLu

wavesoffun Posted August 18, 2015 #2264 Share Posted August 18, 2015 Is it allowed? Yes. Is it a problem? Yes, for all the non-smokers. I keep hoping for a change in policy before my cruise next April! I will be sad if I have limited use of my balcony. I've never cruised HAL before but am going on a reunion cruise and this is the line they chose.

serendipity1499 Posted August 19, 2015 #2266 Share Posted August 19, 2015 That is one thing which worries me.. We are non-smokers & normally book outside cabins, but for our next cruise we booked a balcony.. If there are smokers around us, we will be pretty upset if we can't use our balcony because of drifting cigar or cigarette smoke..:eek:

For the first ten days, we simply couldn't use the balcony because of the smokers surrounding us. Fortunately, for the second leg we were moved to a different cabin on a different deck when the passengers missed the boat. Literally. Our next few cruises were with Celebrity, though we've drifted back to HAL because of the itineraries. We've also moved to aft balconies and have found it much less of a problem. I do hope that you have a positive experience with your balcony.

DeeniEncinitas Posted August 19, 2015 #2269 Share Posted August 19, 2015 We have fingers crossed AGAIN! Had no problem in 2013 with our 24 day Med cruise on The Nieuw. Believe it or not we were blessed with no smokers on each side of us for the whole cruise! Our collectors cruise this past March on The Nieuw we had very courteous Shipmates on both sides of our suite and when we came out in the morning they said we will finish up so you guys can enjoy! If we were having breakfast or dinner outside they were always accommodating As well as with us. Now we are doing another Med cruise Oct 2016 on The Eurodam, and either I hope HAL finally changes their policy or we get wonderful shipmates again! It will be the roll of the dice! 50/50 Denise:)

So be prepared to be "pretty upset" if it doesn't work out. My solution is simple. Looking at doing a booking now, if I book HAL, I like HAL but they have become my last choice because they allow balcony smoking, I don't book a balcony like I would on Princess, Celebrity or Royal Caribbean. I am not going get stressed about the chance of smokers ruining my experience on HAL. And I save a few bucks..... It would be more upsetting to him as he is not well & will not be able to understand the problem.. I'm actually saying a prayer that he will be OK on this cruise, which he really wants to go on... MaisonRose Posted August 19, 2015 #2272 Share Posted August 19, 2015 You definitely need to read the smoking thread. You can smoke on all HAL balconies and verandahs. Ten lashes. I misspoke, sorry. Where did I get that? There must have been a rumor ( or our Celebrity TA did not allow smoking on balconies.. In any case, mia culpa. My apologies. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2084364
normr Posted August 19, 2015 #2273 Share Posted August 19, 2015 We recently cruised on HAL, in Alaska, unfortunately they allow smoking in the casino if the person is actively playing, but even 1 smoker ruins it for the rest of us, I feel that smoking should not be allowed in any indoor area of the ship, if people are so addicted to the nicotine they go buy some nicotine gun or lozenges so you don't go through your hourly withdrawal Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Cruizer Bill Posted August 20, 2015 #2274 Share Posted August 20, 2015 I say give the smokers a place they can smoke. Have a smoking lounge with ventilation for them. If you drive them away they make take their friends and family away too.
hapicruisin Posted August 20, 2015 #2275 Share Posted August 20, 2015 We found an interesting 3 week Norwegian Fijord cruise on Ryndam earlier this year. Never been on HAL before but knew of the smoking policy so booked an O/V cabin. I do not recall smelling any cigarette/cigar smoke anywhere on the ship. So unless one spends a great deal of time on your balcony, that is the way to go. We actually like to be out and about enjoying the ships facilities and the wonderful views. I know that is not what everyone wants to do but it is a solution. Then you can have two cruises instead of one.
