Questions about the EPIC - deck 8

We were just assigned our GTY mini-suite on the EPIC a couple of days ago. I am not a big fan of booking a GTY cabin myself, but my husband (who is new to cruising) wanted to try it and see "what happens". We have been assigned cabin 8069. Has anyone stayed in that particular cabin and have pictures? Is the balcony covered? Any noise from deck 7? Any other info would be great.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

I haven't sailed her YET... will be in November. I also booked a balcony guarantee but I'm okay with any room I'm in, even if it overlooks the top of the lifeboats... I look out not down. Truth is... any decks above will also see the top of the lifeboats. I see it as less noise to be traveled from balconies or open spaces below. I digress.... It looks like your cabin sits above the shops, so you shouldn't get any late night noise as if you were above a nightclub... bonus point for you! Worst case for you, you will see this http://cruisecriticuk.wordpress.com/2010/06/22/norwegian-epic-cabin-analysis-the-balcony/ (not that big of a deal to me, especially if you saved a boatload)... best case, you don't.

I'd suggest looking up SDMike... he has a really extensive review of cabins on the Epic

I really appreciate everyone's input on the Deck 8 cabin. I knew that the life boats were there, but didn't realize that they were right in your face! I also read that the heat from the sun (from the tops of the life boats) is reflected into the Deck 8 balconies!! I have contacted my TA to see if she can change our cabin to another deck if it's in the same cabin category.

Thanks again!

Interesting. We had balcony 8209 several years ago. Since it's the furthest aft of the starboard cabins, we didn't have an issue with lifeboats--that I recall. Now I'm wondering about our transatlantic cabin 11160 which is midship. Guess I'll try to see it on our next cruise. I chose it myself so only me to blame.

TS, your balcony is somewhere near the third lifeboat and it appears to be a mini suite balcony (a bit more interior room than a normal balcony stateroom) so not a bad deal for a GTY. The bed is by the door, see the wave pattern of the walls.

The deck 8 balconies are exposed but perhaps the mini's on the hump have a bit more privacy due to a bit more superstructure/overhang?

Someone on my TA had the same issue. For the mini suite grade these on deck 8 are the least sought after so often get allocated to GTY as people select the upper levels.

From about deck 10 upwards the angle down means you don't see much of the lifeboats and more sea. By deck 12/13 it's perfectly fine.

I usually aim for a deck 12/13 midship or front. Most ents and garden cafe etc are near the front so it saves walking through the casino/shops.

Front - garden cafe, great outdoors. Pool bar, upper open decks, bliss, theatre, O'Sheehans, headliners, cirque tent.

Aft - spice h2O, manhattan room dining, Cagneys and Moderno. Spa, gym, casino, and fat cats.

I was in that room just a few months ago, very awesome and the Epic is an amazing ship. You gotta see the blue man group and Cirque.

MotleyFan;

Is the balcony in cabin 8069 covered? Were you bothered by the lifeboats at all? Any noise, etc? Do you have pics?

Just trying to decide if it is worth it to upgrade to a MC category cabin on a higher deck (or not).

Thanks to all who have contributed info for me. I really appreciate it a lot!

That is why its called a GTY they stick you where they want in the rooms no body else wants if its a busy sailing. You saved money with a GTY. You took the gamble and lost.

I always book GTY as a rule and its 50 50 . I have gotten some great upgrades and cabins and some real bad ones as well. I know the risks and I accept them.

The sun is only an issue if the sun is on that side.:D

Thank you CBC for your thoughts on this whole deck 8 thing. Oh, believe me. . .I get the GTY risk. I have taken a LOT of cruises and only did GTY in the beginning. . .once. The savings on the GTY this time was nice and my Husband (who is new to cruising) thought that he would like to "roll the dice" and see what we ended up with. I explained the whole GTY to him in advance of reserving a cabin, but he still wanted to go with it anyway. Looking out over the lifeboats is certainly not the end of the world, BUT personally, I would have chosen a particular cabin for a few $$$ more. :)

Someone already mentioned looking up poster SDMike who has a ton of good information about Epic Balconies. Here is great info included in his signature block:

Uncovered balcony info:

Epic hull balconies, if anyone is interested in these also:

Hope that helps.

Not at all. You really only notice the lifeboats if you're looking straight down. If you look out at the view you forget they're there. Yes it's covered.
