It very much depends what you like doing?

You need to allow a certain amount for drinks - cocktails, beers, wine with meals, soft drinks, and speciality coffees - that includes lattes, cappuchinos and espressos.

Do you enjoy gambling at the casino? How much are you prepared to lose each day?

Will you want to try any speciality dining restaurants on board? If so, you should be able to find out the cost of these from the cruise line website.

Are you planning on doing any shore excursions? If so, you will know the cost of these up front.

I'm assuming your cruise is one one of the Australian based cruise lines that has tips built into the cruise price, but you may want to tip certain staff a little bit extra if you have received exceptional service.

Then there are the shops on board and on shore.

Think about each of these things and you should be able to work out how much you need to budget for on board spending.

We enjoy a few drinks when travelling - cocktails round the pool and before dinner, good wines with dinner, maybe an after dinner drink. We're not at all interested in the casino, probably won't do many shore excursions but will try speciality dining. I doubt we'll do much shopping. I'm budgeting $100 per person per day, plus extra for excursions and exceptional service tips.

This is a very laid-back itinerary, there's not a great deal to spend money on - a few beers, a few cheap local van tours, etc.

Noumea is about the most-developed & as the dancin' man's post a lot of places - including museums - require Pacific francs. But we got by using a large AUD note for coffees & geting change in francs.

Take snorkelling gear, at some stops there's little other than beaches & the snorkelling is excellent.

You don't snorkel?

This is the time to start.

It really depends on what you want to do and buy!

If you've decided to use a credit card for your onboard account, you won't need much cash for things you purchase on the ship. If you gamble, bring the cash you're willing to lose...as that is the usual outcome!

As far as ports...again, that will depend on what you want to do! If you've paid for excursions on a credit card, minimal cash will be needed. If you're going to DIY, then you should research that port, find out how much things cost, and you can extrapolate from there!

We generally bring about $1500.00 for the week for the 2 of us....that's for gambling and the incidental shore purchase....we don't usually spend it all. Any large purchase we might make goes on a credit card.

Our ship bill was £279 for a week - three lots of salon expenditure, cuff links (DH forgot to pack his), £2x7 for wine tasting, and one shore excursion (for 5). The only cash transactions were in the casino and I have been told not to take too much interest in this!

On shore, we spent about €100 for lunch, on average, and about €200 for our trip to Pisa. It might sound like a lot, but there were five of us.

Our ship was cashless, so we gave them a credit card number on embarkation and that was how everything was charged. For our shore trips we took a few hundred euros with us, generally used credit cards, but able to get cash from machines. We brought back at least €250 which DS subsequently blew in Greece the following week.
