tipping guide (for all of you who want good service with the purchase of a suite)

Recommended Posts

I tip the Butler $20 as soon as I get to the room for taking care of my precruise incidentals & I bring a couple of hundred in singles (drink servers though my favorite servers will get 5's) & 5's (coffee/Breakfast) as I tip everyone as I am served and then I tip big at the end.

I do find that by tipping in O'Sheean's does get me faster service, I always stop by for a Pepsi (using soda card) before bed and there will be 20 people at the bar and my Pepsi will be in my hand in under a minute, it does make a big difference in service (though not necessarily in the Haven where the service is already exceptional) but in the bars, casino, yes the servers will seek out the tippers before the non-tippers, it's just a fact of life.

There are no non tippers since 15% is added to all beverage orders.

So does the DSC, and an envelope to the butler & concierge at the end of the cruise (the contents of which they may not even realize until you've left the ship).

.

Exactly. How and when you tip is a purely personal matter. There is no "correct" formula.

*can I have some popcorn, please?*

Obviously that poster is referring to those that tip on top of the added 15% (we also tip in addition for each drink, especially at crowded venues, as we do in bars on land).

Bet you if we were standing together during the week and I tipped before and you had not they walk over to me first.

I would take that bet.

It's a foolish person who risks upsetting the tipper who hasn't yet given them anything, in favor of the one who's already shown their hand.

You would loose foolish nothing sure money is safe money. Your probably ashamed of how little you tip that's why you hide it in a envelope until you are off of the ship.

It is not called a 'tip' if offered BEFORE services rendered.

A tip is acknowledgement of good service - something you cannot predict prior to receiving it? LOL.

I tip as mentioned at the end of a cruise for services that I have received that I am grateful for.

Do you tip a waitress at your local restaurant BEFORE ordering your meal? I think not! :)

All the crews work very hard to please us!!

We often tip with cash (in addition to the gratuities added to your final bill) to various staff members on the ship that are helpful to us.

Trust me - every time that person sees you - he/she remembers your kindness and generosity...

We also buy our cabin steward/stewardess T-shirts while in port - they really appreciate the gesture (as they don't often get off in the ports), It's a nice thing to do for them since they're working so hard to make our cruise vacation a memorable one.

If I wanted a special table or service then I certainty would show a little gratitude in advance.

Having been the FIRST person off the ship on each of the last 7 cruises, I suspect you're wrong.

Having made friends with many crew and officers, I suspect you're wrong.

Not feeling I have the need to bribe people for service, I don't risk offending them by doing so.

And I tip what I would assume is middle-of-the-road..... always keep the DSC of course, and tip butler & concierge usually about $150 between them (per week), with the weighting based on the requests I've made of each.

So all the people who say tipping in the beginning is wrong and tipping is for after service only never ask their butler or steward for anything when the meet them. Like put the beds together or apart. Extra pillows. Empty the fridge. More towels ect. You just met them say hi and then they go on your way.

It's the same thing I do it is not a bribe I take care of who take care of me. You do the same thing the fact that you have the means to cruise frequently enough that people remember you and your generosity on your return and then kiss your butt is the same thing. You get good service based on past tips I get service based on a past tip only mine was in the beginning of the cruise not the end of the last one. In the end it is a subject to one own judgement

I have never tipped upfront and I've asked for services when we first meet...fridge emptied, extra fruit, etc. (if things weren't done after sending an email to the pre-concierge) and have never had an issue with service. Those that threat the Butler with respect and a smile, get the same service, if not better, as those that tip upfront, IMHO.

In all my over 30 cruises, I've seen so many men giving out tips the first day, with a slap on the back while saying "you take care of me and I'll continue to take care of you". If they only knew the looks on the crew members' faces after doing it...and it is not a smile on their faces. One crew member, after getting this treatment, said to me "I guess he thought I wouldn't give him the same service I give everyone, unless he gave me some money". Oh well, to each their own. Tip how you want, it is your money and your decision.
