irisheileen Posted August 22, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Hello, we are not cruising on this vacation, but we are scheduled to fly out of Newark airport on Sept 6th on a direct flight to Ireland for two weeks! Yea! Now there is talk of a possible Iceland volcano eruption again. Remembering the 100,000 flights canceled during the ash cloud problem in 2010, we want to reserve two rooms NOW in case everything shuts down and hotel rooms become scarce. We are thinking of two nights, just in case. Opinions? Recommendations on Hotels with a restaurant and shuttle to airport? THANKS!!
138east Posted August 22, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 22, 2014 I'd look at the hotels on Glimcher Realty Way - Country Inns, Courtyard Elizabeth, Residence Inn, and Embassy Suites. Not all these hotels have restaurants, but there is an IHOP and a Ruby Tuesdays right there as well as the Jersey gardens Mall with an Applebee's, a food court, movies, and shopping. All the hotels have an airport shuttle. IMO if you're going to be stuck at EWR, this is the area to be stuck in.
Nitemare Posted August 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Isn't it like 90 minutes just to go home? I'd rather be waiting for an extended delayed flight at home than at an airport area hotel!
irisheileen Posted August 22, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) Thanks for suggestions. Is the Courtyard by Marriott near the area you suggested? 858 Broad Street . Newark. It's the #1 on tripadvisor. We are 2.5 hours from home and being driven up and dropped off by someone so we won't have a car. It's a 7:30 PM flight so we don't want to get stuck in the evening/overnight after a "delay" etc. Our Travel insurance will pay for it if it is necessary, anyway. "Better to have and not need, than to need and not have" :D We can cancel by 6pm if we won't need them. I don't want to be one of the thousand of travelers needing hotels at the last minute if it plays out badly on that day. 138east Posted August 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) That Courtyard Marriott is a new hotel in downtown Newark. It may be #1 on Tripadvisor, but it is still in downtown Newark. Typically we don't recommend that folks stay in downtown Newark unless it's the Newark Penn Station Hilton because the area is highly urban and you need to be careful where you go on foot in the evening outside the hotel. One person who stayed at that Marriott reported that she remained in the hotel because she felt uncomfortable in the neighborhood. That's only one report, but typically folks coming from the less urban areas of the country are not prepared for the ambiance of Newark. If you would be covered by insurance, stay at the new Embassy Suites at the airport near the mall. Edited August 22, 2014 by 138east
