Formal or Informal?

Recommended Posts

We're booked on a mid-Aug. Alaska cruise. First timers. Here's my question: I'm a little fuzzy on the difference between formal and informal. I have one formal dress (hope it still fits well enough--I've lost 12 lbs. since I last wore it). Other choices: knee-length silk pink floral sheath, ankle-length skirt and portrait collar sweater. Are those formal or informal? On a related question: is a blazer with slacks informal or casual?

I would consider the blazer and slacks to be casual. What fabric and color is the ankle length
skirt and sweater? I tend to opt for floor length on formal nights. Also which cruise line are you sailing, as some are more formal than others.

Hi Mystery! If you were talking about a blazer and slacks for a man it would be casual on some lines like Celebrity or Casual Chic on some of the other upscale lines. He could probably get away with it for informal, too, although a lot of men wear suits for informal. I'd suggest informal for the silk sheath and possibly for the skirt and sweater as well, unless it is black and/or sparkly, like a St. John Evening outfit or if the skirt is chiffon, satin or tafetta or a fabric such as that. Hi I have quite a few long skirt outfits...very pretty and depending on my accessories and shoes I wear them on informal and casual evenings.
Check out my photos below...you can definitely see the ones that are formal as opposed to the other evenings.
Long skirts feel good to me...I have one citiknits...long skirt and tunic...I love it.

Next up...HORIZON Sept 18th to Bermuda!
