What is the definition of a guaranteed cabin?

Can someone refresh my memory as to what a guaranteed cabin is as opposed to whatever else there is?

It means you are guarenteed a cabin in the category you purchase or better.

 

For example, if you purchase an F, you are guarenteed an F or better (EE, E, DD, DA, D and all the way up to the PH.

The alternative is to pick your cabin by number.

 

If you are willing for HAL to upgrade you (according to their standards) you can choose that option and might get a higher category cabin for no more cost. Of course, you might not necessarily see it as an upgrade.

Word of caution -- a few people have been upgraded to a cabin in a location that they did not like.

It is a gamble when you do a guarantee.

We booked a guarantee d inside and were "upgraded" to obstructed ocean view. We looked out on a lifeboat. On more than one day, there were workmen climbing around in it. It creeped me out and I ended up keeping the drapes closed. Would have preferred to stay with the inside.

We had a VD guarantee on our Westerdam Christmas cruise, and when I made final payment yesterday, I just picked a cabin. I was too afraid we'd end up in one of the mid-ship VA cabins that have the tiny balconies - that would NOT be a "better" cabin for us. I imagine we've reduced our chances for a great upsell, but I really don't care. I love the location we've picked and that's good enough!
