Sunkissed Mommy Posted September 29, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2014 We'll be visiting Halifax next week. Being that we're going to have our toddler in tow we decided to explore the town for the day on our own. We will be going to the Maritime Museum as well as the Citadel. We would love some recommendations for "local" or "mom & pop" type of shops and restaurants to drop in. I love to taste local specialties. However, I don't like seafood, so something other than that please! Also cute shops to stop in to. Thanks!
reallyitsmema Posted September 29, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2014 There are all sorts of little shops and food places along the boardwalk. We love walking along there. We did this cruise 4 years ago and are going again the week after you. We take a cab up the hill to the Citadel first thing. We catch the first guided tour and are there for the cannon salute (they only do the cannon a few times a day, might be a little loud for you little one though). We then walk down the hill to the boardwalk and stop in all the shops on the way back to the ship. The Maritime Museum is on the way too. I love the tugboat from the Thomas the Tank Engine series, great picture opportunity. There are lots of shopping kiosks in Pier 21 too but it gets very crowded at the end of the day. oreosmile Posted September 29, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Donairs in Halifax are like no other. My personal fave is from Revana, which is in Dartmouth, right up from the ferry. The Coast has a list of winners in that and several other restaurant/food categories- might help you find something to suit youth tastes. http://www.thecoast.ca/halifax/best-donair/BestOf?oid=4335925
maryann ns Posted September 29, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2014 There is lots to see and do along the waterfront including a kids' play area. There are places to eat as well. The Tugboat (Theodore Too) should still be on the waterfront but it won't be taking passengers for a cruise. You could take the ferry to Dartmouth and back just for the ride, or take the much more expensive Harbour Hopper: http://www.mtcw.ca/harbourhopper/ You will easily see where the ferry dock is as you stroll the waterfront. If it is a nice day you may want to go to the Public Gardens so your toddler can run around a bit.

no fuss travel Posted September 29, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Just don't order a steak. Seafood is the specialty on the East coast not beef. My spouse made the mistake of ordering a steak while the rest of us enjoyed our fish and chips.
maryann ns Posted September 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 30, 2014 Of course you can get a good steak in Halifax. You just had bad luck.
