OK, here's a "different" question. My wife and I were talking about our upcoming cruise and I brought up the subject of pretending to be someone else on the cruise to make things interesting. I said that I think most of the people we've had dinner with in the MDR have at the very least exaggerated who/what they are to make them appear more interesting. I thought it might be fun on our next cruise to do this. Have you ever done this? If so, who's your alter-ego? I'm looking for ideas - LOL. :p (This is strictly in good fun - no ill intent here)

The real me is interesting enough, and I don't think I have the energy to be someone else while I am on vacation. Maybe I'm naïve but I don't feel like people, at least those I tend to spend any time with, are acting.

I like myself well enough to be me no matter where I go or who I meet....

I don't find people we meet to pretend or exaggerate, if anything, they tend to down play what they do unless they're arrogant, obnoxious fools, which are easy to spot. I just smile when they talk and don't tend to spend time with them. We've met several couples that we keep in touch with and they are who they said they were. I know I don't pretend to be anything that I'm not and neither does DH. We go on vacation to relax, not impress anyone else.

There are probably some married couples who go to the clubs and pretend to be single only to end up hitting on one another and heading back to the room......

 

Also pretending to be someone else doesn't necessarily mean you're pretending to be someone 'better' - richer, more arrogant. It could just be someone different - like add an accent and say you're from a different part of the country or world. I think it would be fun, but I think it takes more commitment than I'm willing to give on vacation.

On a Carnival Liberty cruise, we were first seated at a two person table that was between two rows of booths, in the middle of the main aisle to the back of the dining room. It was like sitting on the median of a freeway. We decided to give it a second night, but it was no better and we went to the maître d and asked to be moved. He said we would have to share and we said that we were OK with this, if the people at the table were.

 

We were taken to a booth on the same level we had been on, but on the other side of the dining room, where one man was seated in a booth. He had a twelve year old daughter who had made a friend and was sitting at their table on the first level. We could see the table from our booth by the railing overlooking the first level. If she was not eating, he would go downstairs and get her to eat.

 

Anyway, he welcomed us and in the course of the conversation, he said he had played football for the Detroit Lions. He told us when he played and it was at least 10 years back, and my husband and I asked some questions and he talked about it. He was built like a football player. He also said he was now on the Board of a charity to teach children to dial 911.

 

We had enjoyable dinners all week. When we got home, I looked for his name on team lists for the Detroit Lions for that time period and never found it. I did find him on the Board for that charity. I may have just missed seeing it, but I don't think so.

 

I will always wonder if he just had some fun inventing a past he did not get to live, or if it was true. I think I believed it on the ship.

Did you ever watch the show Mad About You? They did this once on vacation - it was hysterical. I have the worst memory - I couldn't do it - I would keep forgetting what I had said the night before.

 

 

Season 3, Episode 19: Two Tickets to Paradise

30 March 1995

Paul and Jamie are headed off to a tropical island resort given to them by Paul's parents, since they changed their minds about it and the trip is non-refundable, so Paul and Jamie have to pose as Burt and Sylvia Buchman. The trip has no TV or telephones and plenty of activities; Problem is the activities and the people who were matched to them are designed for Paul's parents. Jamie convinces Paul to play a game she used to do with Lisa when they were kids, where they would see how many different people they could be. Soon, they are saying they are saying that they are anything from circus performers, rodeo clowns, and a secret service agent. Everybody seems to like them, but Paul and Jamie now have to keep track of the lies and what they told those people when they meet up with them. In addition, Jamie is in trouble when she is confronted by the resort's activity coordinator from all the lies they've told. They suspect that they are not Burt and Sylvia Buchman and this will be turned over to the resort's security. Jamie then tells her that Paul is insane. Now the Activities coordinator is alerting all the guests and staff and everyone is avoiding Paul and Paul doesn't realize what's going on until Jamie tells him what's happening. Now everyone at the resort is convinced that Paul is insane.

Wouldn't you know it, I was talking to a nice looking young business man and we chit chatted for awhile and he asked me what I did, so I told him secretary.

He goes which floor, I was just there....................

 

I go 4th.

 

He goes the court house only has 3 floors, what do you work with the pigeons?????

 

BUSTED, we never went out on a date.

I don't know that I pretend to be somebody else….I just try to omit some facts.

 

I hate telling people I'm a nurse too!! Ughh….somebody always has a labor and delivery horror story or a plastic surgery botch job they must talk about or they want free medical advise about something I know nothing about!

 

I have been seat next to pretentious jerks. There is nothing more annoying than hearing about how much money they "won" in the casino or what a great deal they got on their 10,000 watch.

Ummm, fun? I didn't expect to be "judged" so harshly. Introvert or extrovert, there's nothing wrong with being either. I'm not judging Have fun with whatever you choose to do. This was intended to be in good fun. This was supposed to be a fun topic. I didn't think this would be so controversial. It's vacation - it shouldn't be so serious.

I could not do it but I could totally see my husband doing this after knocking back a few. Even if he did though, he couldn't keep it up all week at dinner. It would be more of a bar one night with people you were sure to never see again.
