Hi everybody, was wondering what the best way to hire a car upon returning to Fort Lauderdale from the cruise. We would like to drive up to Orlando. Do we have to go to the airport to pick up a car or is there a possibility near the port to pick up rental cars? Thanks in advance for all the help.

We always get our cars from Avis at the Pier 66, 17th Street location. There is a shuttle to get you there and if you have a reservation, it's a piece of cake!

Once we rented a car from a rental company close to Port Everglades but waiting for their shuttle took abut as long as a cab ride to the airport was so I don't think you gain much by not going to the airport.

Yes, that Avis location is fast and easy at the Hyatt Pier 66 or Budget Rent-A-Car at The Quay, a small strip mall on 17th street right across from Port Everglades.

We often rent a car from the FLL airport as more options for companies and often slightly cheaper prices, even taking into account the airport fee. The airport car rental agencies share a shuttle that runs to and from the port. It is easy - walk out the door of the terminal and the bus is usually waiting right there.

I rent from Budget. They do not charge a one way drop off fee in Florida. Avoid the airport for rental cars or you will be charged extra fees and taxes.

If I remember correctly from doing this a couple of times over the last few years:-
  • Not all the companies participate in the shared shuttle, so for some (eg Hertz) you need to get a taxi - which is often more efficient than the shuttle anyway.
  • Many companies charge no one-way fees within Florida.

One of the times we did this was when disembarking a Princess in Fort Lauderdale and having to get ourselves to Port Canaveral to embark an NCL the same afternoon. It went like clockwork.

We also get our car/van from the Avis 17th St. location...Their shuttle picks us up at the pier & drive us to their office..

We drop the car off the next day without any drop off fee at their location in our hometown which is approx. 3 miles from our house..

We pick up an Avis car at the same hometown location the day before we leave.. Again there is no drop off fee

We have often turned our car in at the Port Everglades Avis office and have seen many couples waiting around for a turn-in to be cleaned and readied for them. It is a small office where they still use the computer instead of the hand-held for turn-ins and fill in all the data on the computer for rentals. While a great place for turn-ins (after dropping off our bags) and transport to our ship, we have opted to take the inexpensive cab ride ($20) to the airport and ask them to drop us at the back of the Avis area. Unload the bags right into the car, check -out at the gate and we are on the way. A bit pricier, but far more convenient that waiting for the shuttle and then waiting in line for paperwork and then waiting for a car. The rental car areas are pretty much a ghost town on the weekends at the FLL airport. Of course on slow days in the port, going to the Avis at Pier 66 Hyatt may be wise. We tend to return on a Saturday or Sunday with seven plus ships in port.
