Ear Infection

I hesitate to blame anyone, as I am probably considered an NCL "cheerleader". Not saying, just wondering.

We sailed on the 10/24 Dawn cruise to Bermuda. As usual, we booked the thermal spa. I didn't think too much about it when a fellow cruiser responded to my review, saying he had been in the spa and developed an eye infection post-cruise. He was questioning if anyone else had similar problems.

Well, I have developed a serious ear infection the past several weeks. Both ears developed inflamation and swelling plus fluid buildup. I have been on two rounds of antibiotic and predisone. Now, my doc says the culture he took a week and half ago came back showing yeast, staph and something else. Another round of medication.

P.S.: That was the only water I was in.

UGH! So sorry to hear that....You're making me worry about using the spa on my upcoming BA cruise. I guess it's always a risk.

Hope you feel better.

This may help after frequent ear and sinus infections I ended up seeing an ear nose and throat specialist who after clearing up the problem told me a simple remedy to use after being in water wether it be the shower, pool, spa etc.simply pour a little methylated spirits on a cotton wool ball and wiggle it in your ears for a few seconds. It dries up the water in your ears so that it cannot sit there and foster bacteria and cause infections. This was a year ago and I haven't had an ear infection since.

I do not use any public spa or hot tub. If you knew how many bacteria were living in there, you'd throw up ....

My daughter used to get swimmers' ear all the time - even from just showering. We started using a product called "Swim Ear", and that has helped immensely.

I love the Spa, however on our cruise last year, my wife and I both got Noro. Our two kids did not . We brought wipes to clean the cabin, were meticulous in trying to keep our hands clean etc. It could've been picked up anywhere but the more I thought of the spa and how unhygienic people were filling their own water bottles from the Fruit infused water and how people didn't shower prior to using the spas , I wonder if that was the cause.

I guess my point is despite the spa looking like a paradise , Ive never seen the staff go around sanitizing. God knows I spent hours in there lounging. Next time , I'll try be even more careful .

just out of curiosity to the OP,

did you submerge your head in the water? or just from hanging out in the spa you developed that? did the person who responded to you with the eye infection dunk his head underwater too? I'm sorry to hear that as they are extremely painful. hopefully you are feeling better. i love the thermal spa and have taken advantage of them on every cruise I've done, thankfully with no repercussions (touch wood)

Tis the season. My daughter, who never missed a work day, has missed 3 this past week with similar issues. My next door neighbor, who is "Mr. Good Health", has been down for 4 days, so sick with sinus infection and assorted issues he couldn't even lie down to sleep. It's going around. Spa...maybe....but............

This is very interesting, because right after our July cruise on the Spirit this summer my teenager developed a staph infection in her nose. She has never had anything like it and she was the only one of us who went into the hot tubs onboard. She recalls being splashed onto her face and nose. It took about ten days after we got home for the symptoms to start, and we had no idea what it was. It took two rounds of two different antibiotics to clear it up. Her doctor was interested in the fact that we had just been on a cruise ship and that she was the only one who went in the hot tubs. I know there is no way to know where she got it, but this thread makes me wonder if it could be a possibility. We will be avoiding public hot tubs from now on as well.

Extremely common.

When I took my Certified Pool Operators training, we were taught that spas are the filthiest of all pools. Depending on the usage, they should be drained and refilled 2-3 times a day, because the filtering system simply can't keep up with heavy usage. If you ever see one with foam in the water, do yourself a favor and stay out of it.

Have you ever seen the spas on board drained and refilled during a day at sea?

I've had the same training and yes, it is really quite disgusting! I am vigilant about maintaining our home spa..

When staying in the Haven on the Jewel a few years ago, we did notice that they emptied and refilled the spa every evening. Timing wasn't the best for us, as that was the only time the spa was free of the two kids that were always in it (maybe 10-11pm). On other ships, I have seen Haven Spa closed/emptied much later (2-3am or so) and that seemed more reasonable. The GV spa was emptied at the end of each of our stays, and scrubbed by three maintenance guys, I was impressed. I wouldn't ever enter the spas on the main pool deck, just watching the usage reminded me of bacteria soup! Don't recall seeing them emptied from our DOS balcony overlooking them, but I wasn't looking either.. I'd assume they were also emptied nightly, but you know what they say about assuming..
