We will be visiting Cochin, India for a few hours on our cruise. Does anyone know if we need a visa and if so how do we go about it. We hold British passports. Thanks in advance. Vera

Yes, you need a Visa. It's valid for 6mths from date of issue, so you only need to apply for it a couple of months before hand. It cost approx £90-100ea, you need to apply for it online via the link below. It is a complicated application so also read further link from Tripadvisor with a guide on how to fill it in(Even though it says 'Goa Visa application Guide' It's still for India as Goa is part of India(if you didn't know, apologies if you did)).

As it's a port of call stop on a cruise, I think you still need a full Visa. Transit visas are just for stopovers in airports. I'ok need one next year also, we'rd stopping in Cochin & Murmango(sp.) on a Royal Caribbean cruise. I did read somewhere that they may be considering exempting cruise passengers from requiring a Visa.
